well I have been somewhat kickin my butt for not getting the bigger motor on my 220 but was playing around on the mercury website and found some surprising specs from their test results. Below is what I found. All the motors have the same optimal cruise RPM which is 3000 but the 5.0 gets better mpg than the 5.7 & 6.2 and it cruises faster. Also if you will notice the 5.0L has faster acceleration. I really wish all these numbers came form the 220, but still pretty interesting.

Seems a little strange.
I would bet, you hook a skier to these tests and watch the 5.0 drop & the other two stay the same.

My tundra will out run my Duramax. BUT, hook the boat up, and the story unfolds.

I really do not think these are apple to apple comparison. The each motor could have different prop and drive ratio so they just can not fix one thing and compare. Each engine should have different configuration to perform the best for the boat. So one engine might get best mirage at 3000 RPM but other might be at 3400 RPM. It is very tough to do true comparison unless they go through all possible combinations with 3 engines.

That and the hull can make all the difference. What the engine might consider an 'ideal' cruising RPM may be entirely unsuitable for a given hull design. Certainly for as small a range as 400 rpm I wouldn't go splitting hairs.

Good, fast, cheap, pick two as the rule goes. Faster out of the hole and faster top speed are all fine and dandy until you start calculating fuel burn rates. Just how fast do you really want to burn that cash at $4+/gallon? I'd be more interesting in seeing THOSE numbers, not just engine specs.
