Well today we planned on taking the 180 out for its last ride this year and we didn't make it far. I took the boat down to the Charles River in Newton Ma, and backed the boat off the trailer when wammo a nice sand bar right behind the ramp about 25ft. The water was about 1.5ft deep After shutting her down when i heard the dreadful noise i got it back to the dock and saw the prop was dinged. Had my budy back the truck back down the ramp floated the boat back on the trailer to assess the damage. The prop was dinged and scratched i think it will need to be refinished but decided to head out i made it about 300yds and the alarms started going off engine overheated got towed back to the ramp and went home. I tried flushing it out with muffs on and then started removing hoses and one had little rubber pieces in it. My raw water intake impeller is in pieces with only a couple flaps left. Yay. What a last trip out. Do you guys know where i can get an impeller pretty cheap? And any recommendations on prop restoration? I was also thinking a new prop with a dif. pitch something to get out of the hole a little better.

Excellent source for the impeller mentioned above, as well as many Volvo parts should you need them. Try a Michigan Wheel prop for your SX drive, they have several for your application.

Sorry to hear about your bad experience! Do you think the impeller may have been on it's way out anyways? Whatever the reason, this will now give you an excuse to get intimate with all the nooks and crannies of your engine. Impellers are cheap and you can probably get one locally quicker and cheaper than ordering online.

If you want a better hole shot just go down one pitch on the prop. If you have a 21pitch now go to a 19 pitch. The prop should be stamped with the size and pitch so you won't have to guess. Look for a "prop shop" and they will repair yours for less than $100

Hey Joe, sorry to hear that your last trip of the season didn't go well. We just completed our last day out on the water Saturday and I will be dropping the boat off for winterizing this weekend. Good luck with the repair.

Thanks guys i just talked with the marina and they want to look at it to make sure none of the rubber pieces went any further than the raw water pump and while its there it will get winterized. I just put almost $60 worth of gas in it too. My boat is a 2006 so i don't think the impeller was on its way out i just think a lot of junk got up there and hopefully made its way out. I think i might put a call into Boat Us who my boat is insured through and see if there has been any other complaints about this spot. I know i'm not the only one to hit there.

You might want to ask them to check the thermostat housing, often impeller pieces wind up there.
The first time I had to do an impeller, was when I was winterizing my old 88 FW 200. Ran it on the hose to warm it up, motor started overheating. Then cooled off, then overheat. Found out that my wife was running the wash and it dropped the water pressure enough to make the engine run a little hot. Saw the folded clothes in the basement! Took apart the impeller and found it was intact except for a little chip taken out of one blade, but the internal cage the impeller runs in shifted and that's what damaged the impeller. Fortunately on a Cobra drive it's a very easy job.

Yeah the impeller went like i said i think there was just too much junk up in the housing. The marina did say they were going to check the thermostat housing for pieces. i was going to take it apart myself but didn't want them to play the blame game you know.

I had mine winterized this past week and my mechanic found a fairly large piece from the impeller inside one of the hoses when draining and adding anti-freeze. I realize these things have a limited life span, but it was new this spring. If mine went in a year, I guess it's possible for one to go on an '06 depending upon use.

I'm wondering if only one fin broke off on mine, since that's what was found. We were also still running at about 170 degrees, which I think is about normal.

Well just heard back from the marina and they replaced the thermostat and impeller. They also found sand and small rocks bits of impeller up inside the therm. housing. But thats it no other damage occurred. They also said my prop is fine it wont cause any problems. It was also winterized and now i'm just waiting for the fiberglass guys to fix a couple chips and will be bringing her back soon
