Bellow Help

Hi,

I ran my engine today on the muffs and noticed water coming out at the bottom of the drive unit, upon further inspection, we think the exhaust bellow is leaking. leaking water out.

#1. how hard to change, (i'm an auto mechanic)

#2. can I take my boat out this weekend (long weekend)?
#3. What damage if any could I do? If i drive it.

Did you check underneath to see if water was actually coming from the bellows? There is also a port underneath where the water discharges from the engine.

If you do have faulty bellows, I would advise replacement prior to using it. You could do some serious damage to your U-Joints and Gimble bearing.

Personally, not a replacement I'd do, but I'm not mechanically inclined either.

As I understand it, water should come out of your exhaust bellow.
If I'm wrong, someone let me know because water is coming out of mine.

Re changing the bellows, it depends on the type fitted..

If it's the short stubby type, it's only attached to the transom. Remove the clamp and hose and fit new, ensuring the ground strap is in place.

If it's the corrugated type, same procedure at the transom end, but the outdrive needs to be removed to gain access to the inside of the tilt housing. The end of the bellows is pulled over a lip and secured to that housing using a large internal circlip. The moulded in holes need to point downwards.

If it's a volvo sx or dp there should be 2 bellows, the bottom is the exhaust and the top (wider) is the drive. The top bellow is the critical one, the bottom bellow should have water in it and there are holes that allow the water to drain out when the boat is out of the water. You wouldn't have water coming out of the top bellow if you were using "muffs" the only thing in there should be the drive shaft.
I'm not a mechanic, but try to do all of the maintance stuff that I can, so I've learned what I can do and what I wouldn't try. I actually just changed the exhaust and drive bellow last weekend. It was kind of a pain, but once you get the transom shield off it's not that bad.
