Hi All -

This is my first post on the forum. I found some great information here as the members seem to be very knowledgeable.

This past May we took delivery of our first boat, a new 2008 H240, and the family and I are really enjoying it on Lake Norman in NC. It has a Volvo Penta 5.0 GXi/Dp, which was not my first power choice, but the deal was too good to pass up, and it seems to be adequate for the lake.

The only trouble I have had so far is with the depth finder. I have the alarm set to sound at 5 ft, but it has been going off while cruising in the middle of the channel where the depth is 50 to 90ft. The gauge reads 3 or 4 ft when the alarm sounds, then goes back to normal after a few frightful seconds.

Any ideas as to what may be going wrong? I keep it dry docked at a marina, and was wondering if it can get damaged from the fork lift or the lift operator?

Thanks -

Hey LKN and Welcome!

Only one opinion, but those few frightful seconds could be a school of fish or piece of debris underneath your boat. Obviously, anything that gets between your transducer and the bottom of the lake will impact the reading. Presumably you're never cruising at an appreciable speed anywhere you're not certain of the depth so it shouldn't be a huge concern. If it is happening all the time and always reads three to four feet it's probably indicative of another issue and you should raise it with your dealer.

I installed a Faria depth guage in my 85 Horizon and I sometimes get a false depth in deep water. The explanation in the previous post sound logical. I would assume that you could take a "known" depth and test it. Maybe beach the boat and measure the depth at the transom to test.

Otherwise you might ask the dealer.
