Hello all,

I just joined this wonderful forum to get some help with my 2002 four winns 180 horizon. Ive had it for 4 years now and its been a great boat (well besides the fact that its currently having issues with overheating and sensors going off) but besides that its been great! Im located in salt water so one big issue has been barnicles and that sort of stuff.

The antifouling paint for the bottom and outdrive that I have been buying at west marine has been quite frankly horrible. Does anyone have any recommendations for a good paint that will actually work? Especially for the outdrive?

Thanks everyone!

I would also mention, some bottom paints are not compatible with each other, you may have to strip and sand off your current paint, if you went with another type/brand. It's a messy job, but would not be too bad on a little 18 footer.

You might want to talk to people who work at local boatyards and find what works in your local conditions...fouling can vary greatly from on location to another even though they are geographically part of the same region...we see that here in Long Island...where I am the fouling is very bad. It's so bad that owning a sterndrive here (if kept in the water) is something I'm not going to continue to do when I move on to my next boat. Outboards only for me from then on.....

Anyway most people around here use Trilux on the drive and transom mount. But unless you brush on a few thick coats it will definitely NOT last the whole season...if your boat is moored or slipped in salt water I recommend pulling it out late July and check the anodes and clean the drive and give it another coat of paint...good time to check the drive oil too...

As far as the hull paint that's much less of a problem...most bottom paints with copper work well in salt...the ones for aluminum just do not work that well...
