Hi all,
I have been lurking for a few weeks now and reading all of the old posts. Lots of good info here and I really appreciate the board. I just registered so I can post and try to help others.
I have a 2001 Horizon 180 (5.0 liter GL) that I bought 2 years ago. It gets used in Florida in the Indian and Banana rivers in the winter and in Maine for a couple weeks in the summer. Trailering 3000 miles roundtrip each summer is a pain but it is nice to have the boat in Maine for vacation.
I have done all the work on the boat and engine myself and am really enjoying it.
Work I have done on it in the last 2 years that I might be able to help others with.
New alternator
New starter
Repaired VDO instrument cluster when power to the speedo and temp sensor shorted
Replaced speedo and temp sensor due to muskrat or otter eating the wires last summer
New water pump impellor and seals
New fuel pump and filter
All fluids and filters for engine and outboard
New 4 blade SS prop with 20 degree pitch (was a 3 blade aluminum with 21 degree)
Completely replaced the trailer brake system. New surge hitch, new lines, new pads, turned rotors and blasted and painted the calipers.
New stereo and rear speakers.

Take care Rob

That thing must move along with a 5.0.
Just curious, Did the starter and alternator go bad or
you were just preventive maintaining ?

Hi Boater,
The starter went bad the first weekend I owned the boat. I bought it in the summer of 2008. That was a tough job down in the hull with a borrowed set of tools.

The alternator went bad last year. I found an aftermarket supplier that charged $100 rather than the Volvo part at $300. That's an easy job.

The boat seems to be very fast. I added the SS prop with 1 degree pitch less to get a better hole shot for pulling skiiers. I just recently did that and added a hydrofoil stabilizer to the outboard. The hydrofoil didn't seem to help the hole shot but has made a big difference on planing at lower speeds. Previously I had to run about 25 to plane while pulling a skiier or tuber. Now I can plane at around 15.
Take care
Rob

Welcome to the board. Lots of great information here and helpful guys with tons of knowledge. Of course there are so many ideas, you might find yourself adding all sorts of extra goodies, but that is what makes it fun.

The starter is a pain. Way down and hard to access. Post more pics. We like checking out the boats.
