Hi.
My 1990 180 Horizon are equipped with a 1987 Johnson 140HP VRO...and it's reaaally thirsty! And the fuel price here in sweden are like over 2 USD / litre (do you guys measure in gallons) anyway, it's really expensive.

I now got this opportunity to trade this motor + some cash against a 1999 Mercury 225HP EFI.

The big questions is how this will change my fuel consumption. Will it be much cheaper for me with this engine (not including the extra cash)?

And, can my boat handle a 225hp?

I think that boat was rated for a Max of 140 hp.

edit...max is 150 hp

Max rating and what you can put on there are two different things. What you have to consider is weight. That 225 EFI is a good 120lb heavier then the 140 VRO. Is it more fuel efficient? No. You don't get more power with less consumption.

Also reviews on forums rate it a giant pile of dog poo

ok. i figured that more HP/Boat weight would make it go easier?
the local Boat dealer said that can easily fit a 225hp enginge. and that would get a lower fuel consumption compared to my 140hp vro...
the boat is heavy and feels really solid. (is solid the right Word?)

i've also read that the EFI's rock solid....

but you guys seems to have other experiences of these engines....
please give me all your opinions.
