What model boat do you have Sanmiam?

I know where my reservoir is and there is no Pump on top, so I am thinking some configurations might look a bit different. Will look tomorrow and post a picture from mine if i can locate it.

I have a 98' 200 Horizon. I figured that the 2000 would be the same setup as Rick had a 2000 and he talked about giving the pump some "love" with a hammer.

It is my understanding that in 2002 or 2003 (might be wrong on the years) VP switched over to a different pump system where the trim pump is mounted way back on the transom. I have never seen it, or really looked too much into it, so I don't have any info past that.

Thanks everyone. My system looks just like picture above.

Any recommendations on pulling the relays? The female receiver of relays is a very fimsey plastic bracket. Was thinking of uplugging the battery and trying to pry the relays off or grabbing relay with vice grips. Should it be that secure? It is 12 years old.

Generally speaking, relays seat pretty secure whether it be on a boat or a car. I pulled mine after 14 years in salt and while they were not easy to get out, they eventually gave in.

Before you go pulling them though, make sure that you test them by listening for the tell tale "click". I have been around relays awhile and I have never seen one that was bad but still "clicked"

Then, check to make sure your helm switch works by pulling the three wire plug in the engine bay (on mine it was on the stern side on top of the engine) and checking continuity between the red wire and the blue/green wires when the trim button is pressed.

If it does click and you have continuity on both sides (when the button is pressed and the meter is on the correct wire obviously) I would unplug the motor and try jumping it both ways directly from the battery (the motor only has two wires going in, and works by reversing direction when the polarity is reversed).

If both relays click and the motor turns both ways and you can rule out a faulty helm switch THEN I would worry about diving into pulling the relays and taking a multimeter tot he seats. The above three preliminary items should only take you 20 minutes at most to run through and could save you ALOT of headache.

Finally got around to pulling the relays. I switched them and the problem stay. Can always go down, intermident on the going up so not the relays.

Prior skematic showed 2 connectors in the circuit. Any suggestions on how to get to these connectors on an H180? Would love to pull-clean- reseat.

Can the throttle lever come apart to inspect wiring at the buttons themselves?

Thanks.

I have the old style large relays for the tilt n trim and they've worked fine for 24 years. I did have to take off the trim piece on the throttle lever because believe it or not I was getting a shock when I trimmed down while holding the metal steering wheel! I found a bare spot in the wire for the down side fixed it with liquid electric tape.

The OMC control has a trim piece that pops off easily, I'm not sure if the Volvo one is similar.

Don't bother trying to disassemble the throttle lever unless you can confirm its the problem. The three throttle wires had a plug that was secured on the starboard riser on mine. To the best of my knowledge it is the only 3 wire connector that has red/green/blue wires.

Just do a continuity check between the red wire and blue or green wire when the buttons are pressed (forget which wire is which). That will tell you if the switch is working. If there is continuity when the button is pressed at the helm then pull the relays and check there is power/ground at the appropriate pins on the seat for the relay. Finally, pull the plug to the motor itself and check if there is power there when you down button is pushed (again, forget which wire is up/down, but they flip/flop depending on which way you are trying to turn the motor)

Also, check the circuit breaker. I had an issue that was a little more sporadic (effected both up and down) and it turned out to be the breaker (one of the terminals had broken internally). Doubt its the problem in your situation, but worth a shot if all else fails.
