I have a '97 240 Horizon that idles high after it has been cruising at app. 3000rpm. If I shut the engine down and restart it, then the idle drops down to its normal and acceptable level. If I don't do this it pops the transmission more than I'd like. Anyone have any thoughts or cures?

It will help if you include the engine size and fuel type (carb/FI). A few questions and a few visual checks to start. When is the last time you changed the fuel filter?... if there is sediment in the filter it can be sucked up during acceleration (causing the motor to lean out...increasing RPM) and settle back when the engine is shutoff. Check the fuel cap for proper ventillation(seals not cracked/broken/holes plugged), if the motor is carborated then check all vacuum lines, and remove the float bowl(s) and check the float(s) for smooth unobstructed full movement, also check the throttle return spring for sticking / binding. Also remove the accelerator pump(s) and check for damage or blockages. If it is FI you may have a/some dirty injector(s)

Thanks for the suggestions. Just to clarify, the engine is a 5.7 Volvo penta with FI assisted carburation. I believe the marina changed fuel filter last fall when it was winterized. I will most likely pull it off and try a new one as it is an easy and inexpensive element. The condition of gas these days is junk. I will also check the other potential problem issues you recommended.

I assume by FI assisted carb you mean TBI, Throttle Body Injection. As waked said a lean condition can cause that or something else causing the injectors to pump extra fuel, could be as simple as a cable adjustment.
