I own a 2008 H180 4.3 Merc I/0. I'm looking for prop recommendations that will give me an improved hole shot. The factory prop# is 832834A45, 14", 23 pitch. My dealer installed the 832834A45P21 (21 pitch) prop at the start of this season. The hole shot is improved, but still a bit too sluggish for a 200 lb skier. Can someone recommend another Mercury prop that would offer a better hole shot and still be compatible with my motor? Cost and loss of top end speed are not an issue.

I just ran through a similar issue last month.

The short answer is, a 14.25 X 19P 4blade is about the best set up for loaded condition and/or holeshot.

Look no further. Your dealer should have test props to let you borrow, or find one that will. A 19p should be fine, just keep in mind that top speed will suffer, maybe top out around 40-42. instead of the stock 50ish

Thanks for the recommendations. I'm just looking for a touch more out of the hole and stay within my 4400 to 4800 rpm WOT. I will take the boat out (when the rain stops), to see where my rpm's are at WOT with the current 14 x 21p and report back.

Beautiful day here, so I took the boat out for a test, with surprising results.

WOT: 48 mph at 5100 rpm's, with 1/4 tank and 2 people in the boat.

This is with the Mercury 14 x 21p 3 blade aluminum prop. I'm surprised at how high the rpm's are. I never did a test with the original Mercury 14 x 23p prop, so I have no idea what the rpm's were, but 5100 seems high for the 21p. My manual states the rpm's should be between 4400 and 4800 at WOT. Not sure what to do now.

With my old boat I had two props. A 19 and a 15 for normal use I used the 19 which I could go wot. When wake boarding I put on the 15 and just new I couldn't go full throttle. Don't know if this helps but just my .02

Check out the mercury Hi 5 prop. That's what you want. I have the 19P on my 1998 180 sunsport RS and it is great out of the hole.

I've been seriously considering the high five, however I'm uncertain about the pitch to order, given that my WOT rpm's are at 5100 with the Mercury 14 x 21p 3 blade. Will the high five 23p give me the hole shot needed? I'm now concerned that rpm's will be too high with the high five 21p.

You'll never get the perfect holeshot prop and stay within factory RPM red line. It's like downshifting in a car. It will take some hand control to keep it within specs.

If you're extremely worried about over-rev you can get get the MSD 6M-2L Marine ignition box with a 5500rpm chip and add on the soft touch rev limiter starting at 4900. They sell a plug and play harness for GM marine ignition, very simple to install and the boat will run a crap ton better too.

I generally run the boat between 3000 and 3400 rpm's for tubing and skiing, so rpm's are not really a concern. I think the 13.25 x 21p high five is probably what I need.

The concern about going to lower pitch props are that you need to educate who ever drives the boat not to over-rev or they'll be writing you a 10k check. A rev-limit would solve that.

No way would I go with the 23. If you don't want the 19, then go with the 21. I went with the 19 on my 4.3 and I'm glad I did.
