Still sounds a little cold to me, but I'm not very familiar with the 4.3. I'd check the appropriate manual to make sure you've got the right 'stat. In any case, I'd expect it to get up to 140F at least, but I could be wrong.

HI guys - I'm having similar issues with my '98 4.3 Volvo. No temp reading at the dash. I just blew exhaust hose, so I need to know if I'm overheating. Both the VDO gauge and the Tstat have been replaced, but still no reading at the gauge. Any suggestions on what to do next? I'm thinking of replacing the sending unit. Can anyone tell me where it is on the motor? Seems like it should be any easy job. Thanks

Have you checked it with an IR Thermometer to see what temp the engine is running at? This will tell you whether it is a gauge issue or temp issue. They are cheap and you can pick one up from Autozone.
