The scariest think I have seen floating about 6 inches below the water on Lake Michigan was a picnic table. People throw the picnic tables in the water off some of the parks for fun. Fun for them, but not for the boaters. I would hate to hit one of those, they would probably take a whole boat down with it.

You think that was scary ? We narrowly missed a semi submerged 40' steel shipping container about 10 years ago ! It's only because there was a strange almost rectangular calm area of water in a chop that we saw it in time.

WOW!

you want to talk about scary. How about being on a 45 foot sport fish with your dad running a charter on plane running hard 60 miles off shore and you have to rapidly swerve to miss a Shipping container that is a few inches above the water. Talk about bring you to a stop and the bottom. That was scary seeing a 50 foot container in our path.

Thanks for all the well wishes, guys. Good news is got insurance settled and new drive is on order. Should have shipped out this week, so hopefully it will arrive next week and we can get started on the repairs.

If you don't have the time to install a 2nd pump; get a 2000 gph pump with alligator clips and a bilge discharge hose; if you have an emergency you can drop that in the bilge and hook it up to your batts right quick and that will empty the bilge fast..

LouC, that's a great idea. The only problem is I can't believe I haven't thought of that already. I've been contemplating putting a 2nd bilge pump in since I got the boat and first crawled in there and saw that little one down there. Your idea accomplishes this goal without any of the barriers that has kept me from completing this project.

Having your raw water hose from the transom mount to the P/S cooler pop off and fill the bilge with salt water encourages quick thinking lol. I always meant to put in a 2nd pump but never got around to it. So a couple of days after that happened (about 2 years ago) I was in West Marine and saw the pump and thought why not get that in case of an emergency, quick and easy to hook up and will pump it out FAST. My 1100 GPH original pump did fine, but you should have a back up.

New drive came in yesterday. True to his word, my mechanic installed it today. Took it for a quick spin after work. Weather sucked, but everything functioned properly. As for the water coming in, mechanic said a few of the transom bracket bolts worked loose. He tightened them up, and no signs of water intrusion on our test run. floated for over a half hour without signs of water coming in or the bilge kicking on. By comparison, the bilge was kicking on approximately every 3 minutes after the incident. Not 100% for sure I'm completely out of the woods yet, but today sure was a good step in the right direction. We'll hopefully be able to get a better run in this weekend.
