I would say a damaged boat, trailer or vehicle not to mention an injured friend or loved one is much worse. Personally I think its more prudent to be out of gear when your boat glides up on the trailer, I also have my lower unit trimmed up so as not to scrape anything on most poorly constructed boat ramps. Obviously in a heavy wind you sometimes need to keep it engaged so it doesnt spin off the end of the trailer but thats at idle only in my opinion.
Again some do it some dont its all good. Ive never had a problem cranking a boat on bunks if the bunks were dunked and wet.
