I had aluminum on my boat for the last 2 months of the season when I bought it in 2007. It was docked. No corrosion but I learned of the mag on another forum and had my dealer switch out the aluminum for mag before last year. The mags were really dirty last fall so they are definitely doing their job. Maybe this is a Volvo issue and not Four Winns??? Either way, it should be an option.

When I bought mine I asked the salesman which ones it had on it? He didn't know, nor did he know which ones were for which. I had them install the Mag. ones even though we live within driving to Atlantic. I'm only using it in fresh water for a while & it's never in the water overnite. Maybe in a few yrs, after newness wears off I'll take to shore??
P.S. It had AL. from FourWinns

When i called to schedule delivery of my boat the dealer asked me a few questions one of which was what kind of water do i plan on boating in. Then upon delivery he told me how the anode worked and why he he chose the one he did.

I just called a local dealer who says they swap out the anodes on all new FW and get a credit back on the aluminum ones from Volvo Penta.

Which dealer was that, Farley?

I got my boat at The Boat Warehouse, and they told me yesterday that FourWinns ships the boats with Aluminum, and they don't do anything with it. I guess aluminum is a decent comprimise between zinc and magnesium, but I am still cranky that they don't even tell you that you might want to consider it. They knew 100% that it was my first boat, and by the other questions I was asking, you would think they could mention that....

I agree that the boats should be shipped without anodes, but with notification on the drive that the correct anodes should be installed prior to customer delivery. That might have saved my drive from needing to be replaced! (although there still might have been an underlying paint problem)

Glad to report though that after the past season with mag. anodes, there were absolutely no signs of corrosion on my drive.

I just simply would not trust the aluminium anodes in fresh water, period.

The Boat Warehouse in Coldwater does not swap them out - but they should, especially on bowriders that are most likely never going to see salt. I called Don Hyde Marine which is the closest dealer to me and they swap them out. I am probably going to use these guys for service from now on.

Geeze, I'd walk right in there with the VP manual, and show them the chart on page 111 that says clearly that fresh water use should be equiped with Mag anodes, and ask them why after a customer has spent tens of thousands of dollars on a product at their establishment, they would refuse to swap out a part that should have been replaced in the first place! Then I would call Four Winns and report the lack of co-operation at one of their dealerships to them.....

There is zero excuse for a dealership not to replace them if they haven't taken the time to do it at delivery IMO, unless the boat is being used in brackish water! The VP manual is very clear on what anode is to be used in each particular condition!!!

Good advice actually. I think I will call Four Winns tomorrow and complain. I was quoted $191 today for the magnesium anodes. Add the exhange rate and shipping and that means more like $260 for something that should have been swapped when new.

What drive do you have? That sounds STEEP! Try boatzincs.com or marinepartsexpress.com I got mine from the latter.

Ok I think that quote was for the wrong parts. I was just quoted $99 including "labour" by The Boat Warehouse. I just called Don Hyde and they don't really care about my service issues because I didn't buy the boat from them. I think they are pissed because The Boat Warehouse sells huge volumes of boats for low margins and then the service from them is less than exemplary. I just left a message at Four Winns. Not that I really care about spending $99 but more about the whole service issue.

Glad I stumbled onto this thread as I need to check mine now. So how can I tell which i have on my boat?

Is the Magnesium more silver (light) and aluminum more grey (dark)? Pics would be very helpful.

I found this link which might be helpful info. to add to this thread:

http://www.volvo.com/volvopenta/uk/en-gb/marine_leisure_engines/parts_service/faq/FAQ_corrosion_1.htm

I have my boat in the Tennessee River most of the time (90%) and the rest in fresh water lakes. So, I suppose if I do have Aluminum, need to check, I'll be ok? (river=brackish)

I have a stainless steel prop if that matters.
