Does anyone know if your insurance will give you a break if you buy and install a Spot Alarm system from ie: West Marine that sells for $399.00 and $150.00 a year for monitoring if your boat is stolen or you need help and push the SOS button they know where the boat is through satellite tracking and dispatch the proper authorities.

Agreed upon value ( I calculated the cost of the used boat and the accessories I have added) for boat and trailer. $276 through Progressive. USAA does not do marine.

My buddy does alot of offshore and he said the policies are more expensive if it has the offshore option. I think he pays in the 5-600 range.

Again, it is hard to compare unless you have all the facts, but at least you know if you are in the rough ballpark.

Not a bad price i don't think. I have a 07- 288 that has a gen and trailer but alot more money. You can get a new trailer for about 5-6 grand (Aluminun). Make sure it has disc brakes. That boat mind you is not legal for towing. Too wide. Anything over 102 is not allowed,(permit only).

07' 288 Vista or an 07' 298 Vista (which they quit making in 2005). I'd love to see some pictures of your 2007 298 Vista.

I'm in Canada, so this might offer some interesting comparisons.

I just got my bill, so I have it in front of me.

2008 200SS, 300 HP, trailer included
agreed value of of $38,000 CDN (which is more than I paid for it, new)
trailer, nav and installed equipment (stereo), engine all included.
$1000 deductible on boat, $250 deductible on nav and equipment on shore.
*$2,000,000 liability and property damage insurance, including recovery of sunk boat

*This is something I thought was interesting. They will pay up to $2M to recover my boat if it sinks, including the clean up of environmental spills that result from submersing my gas and oil filled boat.

Anyway, the premium is $479 annually.

It is a watercraft specific policy, administered by NautiMax, underwritten by Aviva Elite Insurance.

I'd be interested in hearing what some of the other Canucks are paying on similar equipment.

I have the same boat and have the same insurance company that you have and I'm in the same ball park as you.
I think that just having a 2M coverage on the boat sinking and cleanup is worth it.
Most other insurance groups don't cover that.

"Pretty hard to compare policies without "apples to apples" " This is true, BUT no one has mentioned that rates "could" be different from state to state. In Mass, they just lifted about 2 years ago, a large portion of the state regulating the Ins. rates. They have gone down!!!

The same boat in Mass is most likely higher than in Ohio. I pay, $700 with Progressive on a 2007 Four Winns 258 with full coverage and a $500 deducable. On the other hand, Mass pays more (labor) than most states, are taxes & housing are higher than most.

Take Florida, cheap ins, housing, taxes and the pay is about 40% less for the same job in Mass.

I just called NBOA for a quote. They (Traveler's) were significantly cheaper than what I have with BoatUS/CNA. However, the maximum coverages were also significantly lower, and in some cases unacceptably so. So I'll probably be sticking with CNA for now.

yes, that pretty much sums it up on boat insurance... If you buy a new boat, they will insure it for the price you paid... forever... you are free to call them and have them depreciate it to lower your premium.... if you buy used, they will by default insure the same boat for the price you paid for it... which will make your premium less than a guy thats owned the same boat forever... you can probably tell them to increase the value you want insured.... its your call...
