I looked at a yellow one, same engine, in the showroom today. When you get a chance, can you take along a GPS and test the top speed with that 280? I'm interested....................

The plan for the stereo is fiberglassing in 2 subs, amping the factory speakers, adding a component set, and adding a remote for the rear. I've been checking around with different shops but have yet to actually get it done. And still debating if I want to actually spend that much!

Go see David at Earmark Lewisville Marine Division. He does all my work. If I had to do it all over again I would save the $500 and not do the transom remote. I just never use it. But as for the rest you HAVE to upgrade from stock.

Nice setup, need to save some money to upgrade the stock system. How's the lows? Loud without distortion at cruising speeds?

I'm a sound quality freak. Not that happy with the Clairon mid's but i'm waiting on something better to come out, I feel the market is lacking. Its a very clean and crisp system.

We should all be glad we have pre-2008 FW boats, as FW switched to Sony equipment for 2008. I understand that despite the Sony name, the Sony Marine equipment is contracted out (I believe made in Korea), and is not on a par with Clarion marine equipment.

The Clarion head unit ROCKS (CDM4) just not fond of the 6-1/2's

Txjole you are very correct. They are good enough for hanging out at anchor with the sound volume under 15 or so. BUT, you don't get much sound quality out of them and it can be difficult for a guy like me who listens to everything from hip-hop to country to rock to be pleased with their performance for each type. Definitely an amp or two and a subwoofer in my boat's future. I think the speakers themselves would do OK if powered better. It is my understanding that the "upgraded" sound system uses the same speakers.

My boat factory came with 4 basic dual cone Clarion 6-1/2 speakers. I upgraded it when I add the sub, to 6 coaxial 6-1/2s MUCH better sound then stock. And the CDM4 has a 50wx4 amp built in that I have ran to my bow and stern 6-1/2s and my amp runs the mid boat and sub.

Interesting. So, is that a 4-channel amp: 2 running the 2 new 6 1/2's and 2 running the sub or is it a switchable 2-3-4 amp? Curious since I'm slowly planning my attack and looking at all options. Was considering just leaving the 4 stocks 6 1/2's alone on the Clarion head unit and adding an amp and sub as stage one. Then, stage two, adding a 4 channel amp for the 6 1/2's. Then, stage 3, if necessary, replacing the 6 1/2's with better equipment.

Are the stock 6 1/2's that bad? I was under the impression that they were pretty decent.

The dual cones SUCK the coaxial suck less(really ok). My stock radio (CDM4) run 4 coaxials. Not sure how they have my amp hooked up.

I too have the basic system, with the four 6 1/2's powered only by the CMD4. I'm adding the Clarion APX480M amp to an RMS 80W per channel to see if it livens the stock speakers up some, and eventually plan on adding a sub. Although, looking at the fantastic reviews for the Polk MM2104 that I believe TX has, the sub maybe sooner than later. With the config I'm planning, that would require another amp, the APX240M maybe. I'm considering adding a second battery as insurance that the APX480M didn't run down the existing single battery (the only thing holding up my install of the APX480M), but with two amps, I think that'd be a must.

TX, do you know what kind of enclosure you have for your Polk MOMO sub?

*edit - Amost forgot, I am adding a remote as well. With the Sirius radio, the rest of the crew 'takes turns' choosing stations, resulting in a lot of demands on me to punch buttons. I figure I have better things to do, like safely operate the boat. Not certain about placement yet, but it'll be in the cockpit, within reach of the crew. Found the remote for $89 on eBay, and the extension cable on Amazon for $20 something.

A local marine stereo shop here that did my work makes the box. Its a wood box sprayed inside and out with rhino liner. It very well built for a water tight box.

I'm affraid your stock speakers are giving you about all they got. I had the dual cones on my amp for a short time and the sound quality was piss poor. The extra power made the speakers distort very bad at volume.

That was the one thing I was glad I got on the 06. Stereo on the port side and remote at the helm.

Actually after 2003 I think FW switched to Clarion from Sony and now back to Sony. The Sony speakers are so bad, I can't wait to replace them!
