Well at long last...here is what has happened...settle in...it's quite a story...

Facts -

1. Boat is over 2 years old...so out of warranty, which brings up the subject of why boat warranties are only two years, considering in Canada anyway, that the boat sits in a garage for 7 months of the year it's kinda bogus, but that's another story.

2. I am the second owner, which I personally think is it irrelevant, but trust me it did come up

Took the boat to the marina closest to my house, who happens to be a Merc dealer, and got them to remove to engine to see what was up - as you can see from the images - engine block was done - turns out the connecting rod snapped.

So after contacting customer service at Volvo, I was informed I needed to go to a auth Volvo dealer, which makes sense. So I had to find one, turns out the closest one is ironically enough is on the same lake I broken down on, which is an hour from my house.

Considering the engine is out of the boat, I had to take my company truck and drive the engine up to the dealer - he had a look, took pictures and talked to Volvo to give his impression of what happened and informed Volvo. Volvo agreed that it was part failure.

Once I finally got in touch with Volvo to see if they were going to do anything or not - in the end they gave the dealer a big discount on a new block and he now has to dress the block with parts from my old engine. So I didn't get a free engine, but I didn't have to pay full price of a new engine. Just had to pay the discounted price on the block and the labour to dress it.

So today I took the morning off to take my boat back to meet the engine and the new block has been ordered. Block is due in at the end of the week - and looking to pick it up the week after.

Bad news - missed 1/2 the summer on the water, good news boat is now getting fixed.

Signed,

Hoping to get a couple of weekends on the water before storing for the winter.

Well it is nice to know that you are getting it fixed and hopefully you will get a couple of days on the water before you have to put her up for the winter. Let us know when you finally get her fixed so we can celebrate with you boating brother.

There has been no details posted, so for all we know he had low oil pressure and it's his fault. Without all the info, and a full tear down you all should back off Volvo.

Holdem up...i think VP went above and beyond by discounting the profit out of a short block. This was an out of warrant motor...l would be interested in knowing why after 4 boating seasons she gave up the ghost.

99% of all boat engine failures are due to owner negligence, especially 3.0s. People just drive around at WOT all day, change the oil once a year, and expect these little weak motors to take all sorts of abuse.

Rule of thumb on a 3.0... never take it above 4000 rpms, never cruise higher then 3600. They're good small lake engines but really the 4.3 is the superior engine in every regard...even in fuel consumption. If my 3.0 ever blows up, I'll be repowering to a 4.3

I would think that for Volvo Penta to have stepped up, that they have done all the investigation and post mortem thru the dealer.

I am sure that if there was any hint of poor maintenance or abuse they would have had nothing to do with any sort of assistance.

Dack unfortunately got a bad engine, the dealers and Volvo have done a good job helping a customer even though the engine was out of warranty.

Boat warranties should be by time of use not time of ownership, but I'll bet that never changes.

People that use their boat every weekend never have problems. People that use their boat once a month usually break down that one day they do use it cause it just sits all month rotting and rusting. Boats, cars, lawn mowers, anything powered by a gasoline engine actually do "go bad" from not being used. The warranty will never be hourly based.

Easy guys...

Engine was running fine up until that point - used the boat 2-3 times a week - so it wasn't sitting for a long period of time.

Not gonna lie probably when over 3600 every now and then when the lake was flat to open her up. Don't care what size of engine you have - everyone does it.

Had plenty of oil and oil pressure...serviced the engine in early June to get the boat out for the summer. It was it tip top shape.

So wasn't neglect ...it was the engine - connecting rod snapped in half - the Merc and VP dealer both came to the the same conclusion.

Volvo did come to the plate...actually surprised me that they did, based on it being out of warranty.

It's crazy that boats are based on yearly warranties - this may sound like a stupid thought/question to some, but it am baffled why all engines are not required to have a hourly metering. The used boat market must be filled with people saying that there is is only XX hours on the boat. It's seems ripe for misrepresentation...no?
