Wow, so this thread sure went off the rails....

Welcome jbschmoll - don't let the petty bickering turn you off to this site. There is a lot of great information that gets shared here, and more often then not, folks manage to remain civil.

Enjoy your new boat!!

Erik

That crownline 230 is all around a nicer boat as far as owning and using a cuddy cabin might work out, but seating is very chunky with zero ergonomics on how people will "really" sit on a day to day basis. The random fiberglass cupholder in the middle destroying a place to stretch out, lay down or cuddle is a deal breaker. I wouldn't own one because of that. Not to mention the cushion styling is straight out of the early 90s. Some of the seasoned boaters might like that retro look, but it's not for me.

I understand some of the seasoned boaters on this forum might not like me because I don't conform, but what's wrong with that? I give solid advice that marine mechanics back me up as being correct, I work on my own boat successfully, I upgrade my boat with aftermarket parts to make it "better" and post pictures of how to accomplish those tasks for others that might want to do the same, and I'm the most active boater on this forum. I'll gladly take back that last statement if someone else is on their boat at least 5 days out of the week. So what if I'm under 30 years old and paid $1600 for my boat and not big $$ like everyone else. Does that make me lesser of a person? Should I not be taken serious because I'm half the average age and happened to stumble on a good deal? I don't put anyone down, I don't start drama. I post here to share knowledge and ideas.

Come on!!! I dont think anyone around here has a problem with people our age. It is just that you made some crappy comments about "old people". Just wasnt a good decision and I thought it was disrespectful.

Back to the OP: Welcome to the forum, we really arent mean spirited. These folks around here provide excellent help for those of us that are first time boat owners. :|

Hey, It's better they speak there mind rather than send you a crappy lead to a problem, I am getting on and I havent found a problem with the younger boaters , I am glad of any help. Only had my FW 2years and am loving it. So I pay to get the maintenance done, I only have time to ride and clean my boat. Got to admit I have had some great help reading through everyones problems. Guess we all have the one same problem. We all need more cash

PS stay with us Ric and LouC

By the way am I going to have more of a problem running in fresh water only with rust? I run Niagara River and Lake Erie.

Fired up the boat for the first time last night and it runs great. Took a little while to get the fog out of the motor, but once it did oh boy! Planning on taking it out on the water for the first time today. Very excited! Does anyone have any suggerstions for some inexpensive performance upgrades that I could perform to start out. Thanks!

Were it me, I'd just enjoy getting used to the boat first and leave it stock....

Also, as your first boat I'd recommend a boating safety course (power squadron, or something similar) and I've always found the Chapmans Piloting and Seamanship book invaluable as a resource:

I grew up with boats. This is the first that we purchased on our own, my wife and I. I have been through boater safety courses, and I have a lot of experience on different styles and sizes. I just wanted to know about upgrades now that is "my own" instead of a family owned one.

Cool - there have been a couple of threads on the forum around upgrades/mods. No doubt others will chime in with their mods and opinions :)

Ric, nobody cares that you're under 30 years old. And yes, you've provided some advice that is right and is backed up by mechanics (and me, for what that's worth). But you say you're here in part to "impart knowledge" when in fact you come across as though you believe you know it all and everyone else is just old and stupid. Some of the things you believe are wrong, you just don't understand yet.

The forum, since inception, has catered somewhat to new boaters. Many of them find their way here looking for advice on the countless issues confronting a first-time boat owner. When someone posts answers to those questions with the tone that I just described, it has the potential of causing problems for people. We must always remember too, that what is posted here stays here (hopefully) forever, waiting for newbies to come along and search for answers to their new questions.

What would be helpful in my opinion, would be to take more of a "this is what has worked for me" attitude, rather than "do this, or else you're wasting money no matter what any of those old stupid codgers think."

We like having all kinds of boaters here - unlike most boards we don't even make a big deal out of what brand of boat you own - but it all works on a basic premise, which is that everyone has things to learn, some more than others.

I hope you'll take this message in the spirit intended.

U mention upgrades...I would guess the question would be how is r boat equipped now and what is your intended frequent use going to be? Some like grills but I don't care for them on small boats like we have...just an example that there is stuff out there to fit everyone's needs..want..I would love to get a perfect pass system, but budgetting it isn't working out.....every time I think about pulling the trigger on one I I vision my boy starting college in 4 years...and then its like pulling a finger than a trigger.

Perfect Pass isn't that expensive. It's only $1200.

Agreed. Ric, you clearly know your stuff and we welcome the "young" vantage point. I'm somewhere between you (I was once 29 and divorced with a boat that helped me "date") and the old codgers (god, I love the word "codger"). Just that text rarely ever translates how you meant it, so just be cautious in how you state things. Maybe you can even help Cap'n out that he's rolling bowrider.... ;-)

I hope that last remark doesn't get me thrown off this forum. Can't we all just get along.....
