Mine easily screws tight and loosens with fingers - never been an issue. Also it is held in place by a small chain - so I just leave it hanging after opening. I have never yet forgotten to put it in before launching (knock wood), likely because it is visible hanging out, and easily noticed while I am taking off the transom tie downs. I thought these were standard. Do I need to use a wrench?

If you don't leave boat in water then keep plug out...batteries, bilges and float switches can fail.

Nothing just "fails". Maintenance my friend. Maintenance.

In salt water, forgetting the plug costs $250 for a starter. You know why I know.

Mine has a "t" on it. I can tighten and untighten with my fingers. I keep it in the cup holder closest to the transom and ladder so you see it climbing on the boat, but make it a practice to put it in in the driveway when the cooler gets loaded.

Someone on here I think has a plug that has one the has a ball that lets water out,but not in.

I think you will find that the drain plugs with a hole in them and attached to the drain oil hose/plug are standard issue on Mercury power plants.

My drain plug lanyard is a little twisted like the swivel it is attached to gets bound but its nice to have always just hanging there ready to be installed.

Ric...things do just fail, break, quit working or crap out. Saying its maintenance is crazy. Just how do you maintain the inside portion of your float switch? My horn just wuit working and i maintained it perfect. ..Or how long would you expect a fully charged well maintained battery to run a well maintained bilge pump.

Most people have battery switches and many have on board chargers with dual battery switches and shut them down when trailering and storing....that means no bilge....TAKE DRAIN plug out when trailering and storing......more boats/motors get swamped on the trailer than in the water...

Please don't tella new member with a huge investment in a boat to leave bilge plug in all time when you know he is trailering his boat. He may just assume you know what your talking about.

As far as the plug goes...you will get into a routine of launching and retrieving the boat....until then make you a checklist and go by it...until you have it down you perform each item on it, because helping friends can get you to assuming something has been done.
