Well, I'm just about done! Wow, this has been quite the project. But a rewarding at that. Here's the lastest. I have finished installing everything but need to finalize zip tying the wires and making it look "finished". I finished cutting the holes and installed the speakers and tweeters. That required a little bit of gelcoat work to patch one of the small old tweeter holes. I got the amps mounted. Most importantly I followed JL's manual and tuned them with a volt meter to the exact specs they are designed for. I never heard of this process before but it was kind of cool. I downloaded and played sine wave tones at different frequences for each amp then dialed in the amps to precise volts.

Final results. HOLY FREAKING COW DOES THIS SOUND GOOD. At 3/4 volume its essentially too loud to talk over. The bass out of that sub can be felt all over the boat. Good grief is that sub poweful. We actually hit the river yesterday and at WOT it just cranks like you're sitting still. Bottom line, I'm beyond blown away. At normal levels the sound is simply amazing. It feels rich and clear. I was absolutely giddy. I was a little concerned that difference wouldn't be worth the money. But as soon as I cranked it up, that concern went away.

Here's some pics before the final ones of it all installed which I will take today.

My newly carpeted board mounted. The tape was there to help me mount the amps straight since you can really get much perspective in there. Can't see the distribution blocks yet.

Setting up to tune the amps.

All dialed in at 17 volts.

Cut a hole to run the power and ground to the distribution blocks. worked out great.

You can see them in this pic before it was mounted.

Nice work Cincy! I especially like the "dialing in the amps" -- that's a step further than I went.

I adjusted the crossovers for the 4 speakers at about 50-55hz... The speakers are spec'd down to 40 I think. With the rolloff of the signal, it put me right in the sweetspot (for my ears). The 10'' sup I actually ran to about 80hz. I figure with the rolloff, there's plenty of crossover in the signal.

For amp gain... I set my outputs on the deck to flat and adjusted the gain such that the speakers were just barely below distortion levels at full volume. I figure that's my safety net. I can then tweak the eq and settings on the head unit at lower levels.

I am sure your setup sounds amazing. I didn't want to get into the separate tweeters - I really wonder how different they sound to my coaxials. Supposedly, it's the same crossover and tweeter as the separates -- just mounted on the grill rather than separately.

If you think what you've done is nuts... I've been having dreams of fiberglassing in that subwoofer opening and tossing in a new JL 13WT5 shallow sub.

Image

Pick up a nice mono amp like you did... and then add 1 more set of coaxials to my 6 channel amp... closer to the driver/passenge.

Now - if I could only convince my wife that it'll only take "one more thousand" to finish her off.... ha ha ha.

Ok, its finally done! (well, I still may shorten a few wires and/or use some of that flex tubing stuff to cover them but its good to go. Now I can start actually cleaning it! I will also need to listen to lots of music and make sure the cross overs are set where I want them. I could see lessening the bass in the rears a bit more than the fronts because the sub is so powerful back there.

Cougar- i doubt the separate tweeters sound any different but they worked out well to cover up the existing holes.

Good luck talking the wife into another 1k. Me and my wallet are officially done with the electronics upgrades.

Thanks fellas. Took longer than I thought it would but paying attention to detail payed off. I'm really happy with the outcome both in the way it looks and sounds.

I think anyone can do it so long as you have the right tools, patience and a little bit of forethought in planning it out. Obviously having Cougars insight helped a great deal.

Cincy:
That is nicely done… I am not a stereo guy but I can tell the detail went into the project. If I ever get a urge to do such a project now I know who to consult.

Awesome Job! I feel like a goof saying this, but I'm planning to add 2 more of the sony xs-mp1620w speakers and an amp to the cockpit area of my boat. Doesn't hardly qualify as a stereo upgrade compared to what you and cougar have done. None the less you guys are inspiring.
