Older, salty, sterndrive boats ..... Image ,usually a real gamble unless they were taken care of meticulously for all those years. Thus the low prices. Stick with the boat you are looking at, at least you have a dealer willing to make things right before you purchase.

Low price = old and salty.. yeah you really hit the nail on the head there buddy. You forget I paid $1600 for my 2000 H180 that came with a full service record since the day it was new. It was sold cheap not because it was old and salty, but because they just wanted it out of their driveway.

YOU forget, I have a very good memory. I don't think there is anyone on this planet that doesn't know your story about the boat you have owned for 8-1/2 months. Sometimes people get lucky, sometimes not. Buyer beware.

Gotta agree with the Captn on this, I'd for sure pay more for a nice freshwater boat if I was getting another I/O. The one good thing about salt water, is that it does not rot wood like freshwater does, the bacteria (fungus) that eat the wood can't live in salt water. So you are less likely to have a rotted transom but rain water can rot the deck, etc. But you have to carefully maintain things like anodes, esp the exhaust system, which corrodes pretty fast in salt. We inspect manifolds at 5 years, in fresh, I bet you never have to replace em.

I'd even consider going up to a freshwater area like Lake George, if I wanted to buy a nice I/O, but here an OB makes more sense.

Well I can tell you right now why they will do anything to get the sale. Let's say the boat is $8000, which is TOP dollar for a 1996 plywood deck boat. I don't know how much it is, but that's an example.

#1, it's already been sold once for full asking price by them (Example: $8000)
#2, Not long after, they buy it back cause the guy needs $$ (they give him $5000)
#3, They're selling it again, for full asking price ($8000)

I deal with boat shops all the time. If they're selling it for $8000, they paid $2000 for it in some local classifieds cause it didn't run cause it sat in someone's garage for 5 years (hence new parts). So they're selling a boat for $8000, and they're making $8000 profit. Of course they'll fix whatever.

So... what the buyer should do is.. correct. Get em for everything. Have them fix every single little issue. They will. What's $1000 of parts/labor when you're still making a sick profit on some old boat. Make sure to pay the $300 to have a 3rd party boat mechanic come in and inspect EVERYTHING.

If the dealer is going to stand behind the boat like that, write the check and call it a deal. Boats that are used in salt and you have no idea how they were taken care of for the past 15 or so years can be a gamble.

Congrats on the decision. My oldest was chanting "come on summer...we want to boat" last night . You are lucky on the snowmobile thing. Our Michigan winter has been mild and very little snow. You need to drive a long way to find, some nice, uncrowded trails here.

I actually went to Michigan for the first time this year to snowmobile since we had no snow in Pa. We did 520 miles in 3 days in the Greyling/Gaylord area.

If I wanted to get rid of the carpet in the boat is it expensive to have the deck glassed ? Anyone know or had this done ?

Taking up the carpet is not that bad, but getting the glue off they use to glue it down is really a pain. I had mine glassed, but that was part of the deck replacement, so it cost more than pulling up the carpet and rolling gelcoat on the deck. It's a lot of work, in your case, if you store the boat carefully and make sure your canvas is water proofed, it may not be necessary. I did mine that way, because I could see that the construction they used was just rot prone in my opinion. The deck was not sealed well, the holes drilled to mount seats were not sealed, and then they put carpet that holds moisture on top of that, ideal conditions for rot. I would take it out of storage after 5 months and the carpet under the rear seats was still damp. I had a good cover on it but the water still gets in. Now, with the 'glassed deck, the water that does get in evaporates fast.

If you wanted to do it yourself, you'd have to get a belt sander, palm sander, and all the safety stuff (3M fume respirator, goggles, tyvek suit, etc).

Another alternative is this, there is likely a thin coat of glass on the deck. You could remove the carpet and then remove that glue (lots a luck) sand it well, and paint it with a deck paint for boats, you can also add a non skid substance to it. Then, when you are going to replace the seats, put some 3M 4200 sealer in all the screw holes to keep out moisture. That would be a bit easier than rolling gelcoat, but I have seen rolled gelcoat jobs that looked great.

There are still other options, like marine deck vinyls, that can be used, but installing them takes more skill, and I'm not sure that they really are impervious to moisture.

Having carpet on a plywood cored deck in an open boat, is like putting indoor/outdoor carpet on a house deck, made of wood, makes no sense, covers up lousy glass work and causes rot.

HA, you think carpet on wood is bad in boat construction? How about making the hulls out of a porous material called gelcoat? Yet... every boat you see forsale today does not have any kind of waterproof barrier on it's hull that sits underwater slowly absorbing water until you get visible blisters that cost thousands to fix. You are forced to pay $$$$ for an epoxy sealer/bottom paint to save your new boat from costly damage and in doing that it DEPRECIATES the value of the boat! How insane is that? Saving and protecting your boat from damage lowers it's value compared to an unprotected boat!

I know this summer I will barrier coat my hull with interlux interprotect 2000e. It's only $90 a gallon for white, it will barely be noticed and I'll buff the sides to be gloss to match the gelcoat. Hopefully I'll sleep better at night knowing my boat rests in water 24x7x365 without blisters growing. I have no need for an ablative paint, the worst thing to attach to my boat in this lake is some scum that brushes right off.
