I bought a 30' Magic Tilt triple axle bunk trailer for my 298 Vista and I had a club member pull it out and park it at our gas dock so I could work on it. Once I have my boat ready to go back in the water, do you think my 2007 Nissan Titan 4x4 will be able to back it back down the ramp? The trailer is parked only a couple of hundred feet from the water and the boat weighs 10,000 lbs and the trailer weighs another 1,300 lbs. I would like to be able to pull my boat out every year and didn't want to keep bothering club members to do it with their big trucks. I know that I can't haul long distance with my Titan but didn't know if I could go a short distance. Thanks.

In the situation you describe, you could launch a boat that is well above the vehicles rated capacity (at your own risk). Launching is easier than retrieving. As a kid, I once launched my 16' ski boat with a riding lawn mower and could pull out the empty trailer, but could not pull out the boat and trailer.

I would make sure you have enough crew there that the driver of the truck can remain seated and holding the power brakes, so you don't need to trust the parking brake. You can also test pulling the boat back up the ramp prior to launching, so you can decide if you want to use that vehicle at the end of the season.

Since you are replacing a truck, I'd suggest a truck based SUV. Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban, Yukon XL, Expedition, EL.

I'm a GM guy and just bought another Suburban. I went with a 2011 1/2 ton this time as I am keeping the old '99 3/4 ton with the 454 for the heavier hauling requirements.

The 1/2 ton with the towing packages (K5L) is rated to tow 8,000 lbs. I towed a 7x16 enclosed trailer 600+ miles a few weeks ago. The Suburban towed it great, but we were fighting headwinds and the fuel mileage was really poor (8.5-9 mpg @ 65-67). It was also cold (10-15F) which actually seems to make a bigger impact on mileage than the weight being pulled. The trailer was empty (2600 lbs) for 300 miles and loaded (5000 lbs) for the rest, mileage was the same.

Just took the Suburban on a 3500 mile round trip vacation (not towing) and got a high of 21 mpg and a low 14.5 of mpg. Temperature and winds were the only major differences.

I know you said SUV, but have you sat in the backseat of a F150 Supercrew cab? I had a Ram 2500 Extended Cab and the Supercrew has so much more room. Screaming deals if you can find a leftover 2014 too....

+1 on that.. I have a 2013 supercrew 4x4 with the 5.0 and it hauls like a dream.. no issues at all..

I'll add a plug for the Sequoia in this category.

Durango or Tahoe. Really nice rides, even when towing.

I suppose to be comprehensive of the "truck based" SUVs we need to include the Armada and Infiniti QX also. And the Cadillac Escalade and ESV version.

All the large SUVs are easily capable of hauling a 19' boat. Even most of the largish crossovers would be comfortable hauling it.

It comes down to personal preference in most cases.

The reason I would argue for the Suburban, is the amount of space you get with essentially no degradation in economy and capability. The 2010-2014 1/2 ton 4wd Suburban is rated at 15/21. Name any other large SUV with the same space and capability that is comparable. The closest is the Expedition EL. Since Ford is out for preference reasons you are left with the GM options or the Sequoia or Armada/QX.

The Durango is no slouch, but you only get a 2 passenger 3rd row and it is a unibody design/construction. They do look nice though.

I tow my H180 with a 2014 edge with AWD and a tow package. The boat is under the tow capacity as well. It seems like most mid-size SUV's like mine wont be able to tow much more that 5,000 pounds based off the manufacturer's rating. I believe my Edge's capacity is 4,800 pounds. I had no complaints with how it towed the boat this last summer.

I have used a Toyota Highlander for coming on 6 yrs now no problem retrieving my H200 Four Winns. OK gas mileage drops when towing, thats expected, but I can't fault the Toyota. 5000lb tow limit. My boat and trailer is about 4500lbs gassed up.
