:D

I didn't get those pics last night, but I will today. I'll get as well as I can behind the stock sub and down the back of the helm.

Here's some pics.

1. The deck plate with the cover off next to the stock Clarion sub. You can't tell anything from this, but here it is anyway. Clearance from the lower edge of this opening to the outer hull is between 5 7/8" and 6" MAX (from the surface of the gel coat, not the surface of the bezel). Clearance increases slightly as you go up (there's more clearance at the top edge of this opening than there is at the bottom edge - but not much more).

Image

2. This is as good as I could get behind the stock sub, and it was difficult to measure behind there. My estimate is that there's 2" of clearance behind this sub.

Image

3. Here's the panel below the helm, and I think it's going to be more of a problem than using the stock location. See that "lip" about halfway down? You've only got about 8 1/2" of flat surface there - and even with that - see the next pic.

Image

4. The blue line shows about where the shelf is inside the storage. I think you'd have to cut out that shelf or modify it in order to use the space. I had forgotten about the lip on the panel, and didn't think the shelf would interfere in that location.

Image

5. It's a darned shame, because if it weren't for that shelf, here's what you'd have to work with:

Image

I also thought about recommending the big flat surface behind the captain's seat, below the sink - but then realized that the fresh water tank would be in your way.

To tell the truth, my take on it is that you're going to have to use the stock location, and if that means using a shallower sub than you may just not have any choice. One thing that might help is this...

6. Notice in this pic how there's a little more room on the surface above the sub (about 2")? If you were to mount it in that location but up as high as possible before hitting that lip, you'd have a tad more clearance. It's impossible for me to say how much - but I'd feel safer in saying you'd have a good 6" to work with there. The only thing back there (on mine) is the steering cable, which I think you could work with.

Image

Sorry it took this long to post these, but hope they help. If you decide to use the stock location, I highly recommend starting by putting in a deck plate like mine. That way you can verify clearances and see for yourself what you really have to work with, and if for some reason it isn't going to work you can close up that hole and it'll look "right." Way better than hogging out a 10" hole or whatever the sub needs, and then realizing, "oops."

Mike,

Thanks! This is great info...

Moral of the story for me is that I need to stick with that side mount... move the hole up as high as possible... and if I run into any issues, I'll fab up a little 1/2 inch starboard spacer ring to give me the right amount of clearance.

Not as big a deal as I thought -- a 1/2 inch spacer is alot better than a 1 1/2 inch spacer...

I'll definitely be crossing my fingers that for some reason my particular boat has a hair extra space and I don't even need a spacer.

Now -- who knows a good supplier for that starboard stuff? I just need a 12'' X 12'' peice?

Any recommendations?

Yeah - unless something big has changed in that area since '05, I'd say a 1/2" spacer (or even 1/4") will be your worst case, and it could be that you won't need anything.

Jamestown Distributors - I've bought stuff from them in the past and been very happy with the service. They're a major wooden boat materials supplier.

I love it...

Looking at the pictures, if I raise up the sub to as high as I can go - the deepest part of the woofer would basically land right where that access hatch is. If there is 6 inches of room there - then it'll fit. I need 5.93.

I think I will measure out as best I can... then find a place to cut the hole... test fit... and if I need a spacer, I can cruise up to a west marine or boaters world and pick some up. Shouldn't be too big of a deal.

I'm still waiting for someone to say, "It seems like there's a lot of wasted room between the liner and the hull."

That's not waisted space, Four Winns planned that space for the "required subwoofer cabinet volume".

Hey guys. I've been following this thread for a few weeks, and most of you seem to know what you're doing.

I laid eyes my boat last night for the first time, and I measured the speakers it has. There are (4) 5.25" Sony speakers, and I'm not expecting much from them.

I was looking at the Polk Momo's and I think they are pretty cool, but they only come in 6.5" sizes... has anyone jammed 6.5" speakers in 5.25" holes? I'm hoping to use 4 of those with an amp on them, and get away without a subwoofer.

Thoughts?

Any help or pictures would be appreciated.

Thanks.

:?

I can't speak to the sizes, but the Momos are HIGHLY recommended by some of the most knowledgeable boaters and electronics gurus I know.

You should have room to "relieve" the hole & fit 6.5s in there.
I'll be replacing my Clarions with these in the near future. Wakeboarders demand the loudest of audio speakers and all that I have spoken to swear by them.

Mike - my thoughts didn't really translate into type properly. Sorry. That said, you're on list of guys who know!

Paradise - did your boat come with 6.5" or 5.25"?

Brent - those speakers look awesome. They are only 6.5" as well though...

I figured that. I still wasn't happy with it once I re-read it. Anyway, moving right along...
