While you're at summerizing, you fellow fresh water types might consider changing the outdrive anodes from the stock Aluminum to the recommended Magnesium anodes. The part numbers are also listed in the Volvo Operator's manual.

I did change mine already. Amazing how bad the OEM aluminum ones were after only 100 hrs. Curious though what perpose do the anodes serve? They act as a ground?

I swapped mine out to Magnesium also, it'll be interesting this year to see how they fare. My boat is trailer kept.

They are their to fight corrosion. They will corrode instead of the props or your outdrive. There was a guy on CSR last year who bought a used 260, that he had the previous owner put a new B3 on, as it was that bad.

Here's a pic.

If thats not enough to make you change your anodes as soon as they need it...I'm not sure what is!

I was starting to get some corrosion on my outdrive so I am glade now that I did change them already. The anodes looked pretty bad.

WOW! That thing must have been wet slipped. I had some white scale, looked like lime deposit, on my outdrive but DANG, nothing like that. If I can find a local parts place, I'll order the new impeller kit and the Magnesium anodes or else I'll get them online. Just haven't had a chance to get at my manual yet, probably tomorrow.

As well as having the correct anodes, the bonding wires need to be in good shape and securely attached. They electrically connect all the metal bits of the outdrive together, so the anodes protect all the parts, not just the particular parts they are bolted onto.

How can I tell if my anodes are aluminum or magnesium?

I'm running the stock ones, and they are a silvery-white color. They have little white dots on them after pulling it out of the water from a weekend. I boat only in fresh water.

I will have to give PhilDill props for changing out my anodes for nothing under warranty. Warranty work is great there. just not for winterizing and 'Summerizing"

Maybe they know I run this place? I have never brought it up.

Take a look for numbers and letters on the anode itself. As I recall they have a 2 alpha abbreviation for the metal used - AL for Aluminum, MG for Magnesium, etc. Come to think of it, the p/n and code may be on the bottom, so you might have to pull one. Here's the AL ones I pulled of mine last season.

Those look pretty good compared to the aluminum ones I pulled off mine. I think my lower one had about 1/2 of growth on it and the upper not much better.

Remember, anodes are supposed to corrode! If they are not corroding and still look pretty, something else (something you don't want to) is corroding!
