Hello all, I am new to boating, but very mechanically inclined. I recently bought a 87 Four Winns 170 Horizon as a project and am slowing working my way through the systems to make her sea worthy, but have hit a roadblock in the way of a steering cable. The previous owner had removed it for reasons unknown, so I have nothing to compare it to for replacement. I have searched tirelessly for the part #, or length or any info on what is the correct size for my boat to no avail. I would truly appreciate any assistance in getting this thing afloat.

Get out the tape measure would be my best suggestion...unless someone else has the same boat who could tell you.

I was hoping to find someone with one. I really don't understand why this info is not readily available. Can someone tell me the path the cable runs? I have nothing but the steering wheel and the rack, which is removed. Thanks.

Here's a link to the Teleflex Marine PDF that tells you how to measure for length (see page 6)-

Thanks for the link. I am new to the boater's world and find it amazing that there is not a database that gives you part no's or standard lengths for steering cables on boats. I have been into restoring cars, motorcycles, atv's and even the occasional PWC and have never encountered this before. There is nothing special about my 170 Horizon that would require special attention or custom one-off parts. Just an observation.

I figure that I would pass along some useful info to hopefully benefit someone in the future. The correct length cable is 14'.
