Post subject:  SX Cobra gearcase lube

I have a 1995 200 horizon Four Winns with a 5 litre Ford, no fuel injection, SX Cobra outdrive (is light gray in color, has the hump on the top, oil drain is below and the full oil plug is under the platic cover on the top right of the outdrive as you face the front of the boat)

I used to use OMC Ultra HPF gearcase lube, pn508318. It was not available so I used Evinrude/Johnson by Bombardier Ultra HPF gearcase lube, pn 775601. I can not find it now either. I was told is different??

So I am somewhat at a loss.

Can I just go to an auto parts dealer and get 75w90 or 80w90 GL 5 synthetic oil?
But which viscosity? Is it the same stuff? I gather it MUST meet GL 5 and be synthetic.

Any one know what is different about Evinrude/Johnson Ultra HPF PRO ?

I may have last changed it 3 or 4 years ago, it was clean as a bell as it did not get a lot of hours
on it.

Thanks

I don't know the specs on your drive, but if it was designed to use full synthetic GL5 75W90, I don't know why you couldn't just use the current Volvo lube: http://www.marinepartsexpress.com:8080/mpeCart/details.faces?productId=1141679.

Welcome Ron! I just changed mine yesterday and used Valvoline Full Syn GL5 75W-90 from NAPA (marine side of the business). So far, no probs... and only $11.99 a quart.

Oh, and you really should change it every year, even if low hours. Not so much for the changing, but to check for water intrusion or metal bits.

NAPA supplies parts for both auto and marine applications. When I say marine side of business, basically the salesguy pulls out their marine parts catalog from under the counter and looks up applicable marine parts numbers, then goes in the back and gets it. Most NAPA's usually only stock auto parts on the shelves, and marine parts in the back. You can get the Valvoline lube at any NAPA...

Mobil 1 full synthetic is the gear lube sold under the VP name...however in that one you could also use the Merc blue/green stuff. The full synthetic lasts longer but the merc stuff does work.
