My boat would not go over 3800 Rpm, after a month in the dealer they determined my ECM was bad. Of course the original ECM is no longer available so they got an updated replacement from VOLVO with a new wiring harness with adapters for the new ECM. Now the boat will not even start. ANYONE have any helpful info. Every mechanic I have ever asked about this can't recall ever replacing more than 1 of these units if ever replacing. The part alone is $2300.

Yeah, I would definitely be contacting Volvo too, especially considering that an ECM costs them about $150 or less and the harnesses under $100... It is amazing how boat engine manufacturers can charge across the board for technology that is 1-2 generations behind automotive. They cannot claim development charges, as most of their main products do not change/are not updated for years, and the things they do introduc are mainly much cheaper to develop electronics or add-ons. Even their "new" engines coming out next year are already outdated, considering GM will be aggressively phasing these blocks out starting in 2014.

I had to replace an ecm on one of my engines "99 5.7 gsi, the most frustrating part was actually diagnosing the problem. I did a lot of research and asked for a few second opinions. Mine was a mefi 3, which is no longer available, however you can still find them on e-bay. I purchased a mefi 4 from a performance engine builder in AZ. It was just a standard mefi 4 off of a crate engine. Volvo will tell you that you have to buy the wiring harness $1300, that's bs. Your current wiring harness can be repinned to connect the newer ecm. It takes a few hours, but I think it's worth it. I spent around $800, changed from mefi 3, to mefi 4 with original wiring harness and it runs great. The only difference I notice is on start up, it takes about 10 seconds longer to idle down. Another option is to have the ecm reprogrammed. There are a few shops around the us that can reprogram the ecm if it is not damaged.
