Cast iron tends to do that.

Too Funny. Only American Castings can handle American Water!

Are you sure that wasn't "World Water" (aka Salt)?

How old are they?

I've seen a lot worse. They still have quite a bit of usable life left IMO.

I take it you bought them from a guy in America, that probably didn't offer the truth about the "fresh water" he was running his boat in. Just curious, are you replacing the ones you ran in Aussie water? :)

Is that rust on the sealing faced of the manifolds, or is it the remains of the recomended copper containing adhesive? ? I suspect the latter. Those sealing faces should never experience water, whether fresh or salt.............If he bolts are not retorqued after a few hours running after the gaskets have been changed, then the gaskets can leak and let water into the exhaust passages, as well as onto the sealing surfaces and exterior. I suspect that is why VP now advise the use of a gasket cement, to make the process of sealing the manifold to the risers more foolproof,

I had just imported the entire boat from LA (USA) and removed a riser to inspect.
I had new gaskets put back on the risers but decided to simply replace/ upgrade with stainless steel ones.
I suspect these are original manifolds & risers from 1997.
p.s. The starboard riser was a good 20c hotter to touch than the port riser. Better safe than sorry...

Did you use the combined manifolds/ risers from Hi-Tek, Queensland , or a stainless steel riser?

They look good, don't they? When mine eventually rust through, I'll look into getting some of those. I'd clearly have to factor in import duty, VAT and shipping on top of the $AUS cost. With them weighing so much less than the cast iron ones, shipping may not be too bad ( importing the cast iron ones from the US is horrifically expensive; non OEM manifolds and risers £402, shipping £470, import duty about £25 and then 20% VAT on the total making around £1,100 ( plus whatever administrative charge the post office decide to charge for collecting the taxes!)

I checked with Hi Tek (Australia) for a price on their SST manifolds for VP 5.7 They quoted $2500(US) delivered to the states. Lead time about 2.5 weeks. 5 year warranty, and claims increased power, and reduced fuel burn.

Abstract thought; cast iron manifolds last quite well; it's the risers that cause damage if they fail. Why not use plastic risers with aluminium manifolds (to conduct away most of the heat)? The riser temperatures aren't usually more than ca 40 deg. C even using cast iron. Aluminium manifolds could alllow that to be even lower, as the thermal conductivity is much higher. OK, if there is an overheat situation, the risers would degrade,, but the rubber hoses would do the same anyway. plastic end caps have been used for automotive radiators ( 110 deg. C + service temperature) for many years.

The temperatures you're referring to are the outside temp's of the riser.
There's a water jacket that is removing heat from the +/-750c exhaust gas.
Plastic would last minutes, at best!
