Hi!

In the process of ordering replacement parts for my outdrive and as I read the manual it looks like I'm going to need a handful of products to put it back together. Now I've read a few threads regarding this topic but I can't seem to find a common answer so here it goes again.
I'm just looking for an alternative/best

-Thread Locking Compound (Loctite BLUE OR RED?)
For the pinion bearing screw that connects the u-joint

-Gasket Sealing Compound
To secure the pinion bearing carrier back to the outdrive.

-EP/Wheel Bearing Grease
Grease the u-joints

-White sealing compound
Connect the outdrive (6 studs)

-Triple Guard Grease
Pinion bearing seal lip

Thanks in advance!

Well I've never had to do the u-joints but thread locker sounds like a good idea. Red vs blue, I think one is more permanent than the other, but you have to check which. I'd probably use the one Volvo specifies....
For the 6 studs/nuts that hold the drive on, I always use OMC gasket sealer (Permatex Aviation Seal I think is the more commonly available version) and I have never had trouble with getting these off after a 6 month season in the water.
For greasing the Ujoints I use Pennzoil Marine trailer wheel bearing grease, same if you have a grease-able gimble bearing.
For the driveshaft splines themselves, I use OMC Triple Guard Grease. I also use that on the part of the bellows that seals up against the bearing carrier. All this is as per the factory OMC shop manual.

If you do this once a season, combined with changing the drive oil/drain & fill gaskets you will get a very long lifespan out of your drive system, and avoid problems with the ujoints, gimble bearing and other issues like the drive not coming off because it was left on too long.

Always check the drive oil for water (milky appearance) at the end of each season, and check for wear particles on the magnetic drain plug.

Thanks LouC

Yeah unfortunately I found a leak in the bellow so I removed u-joint from the pinion bearing for inspection.

The Volvo manual says Loctite Thread Locking Compound of OMC Ultra Lock Adhesive so I was just wondering what's best practice.

A suggestion I can make:
find a local Volvo dealer and buy some parts there now and then...you can ask for advice from the parts guy, a lot of times they will know what the mechanics use when they service the boats brought in.
I do buy some stuff on the 'net but I still buy stuff from an ex-OMC shop that has 2 excellent mechanics. Even though I have not had to bring my boat into them for over 8 years, they have given me good advice over that time because I ask when I come in and buy stuff from them. A local dealer contact will make your life as a boat owner/maintainer a lot easier.
