I have a power steering belt that will not quit squeaking. It looks to be in good condition but it does not seat all the way down
in the pulley. The previous owner must have put the wrong belt on. I cannot see any numbers or marking on it. Is there a
reference for which belt I need? Its really frustrating to have a day at the lake ruined by a loud belt. Thanks!

I don't have a reference, but what I did is take the belt off and brought it to my local AutoZone. Told him I needed the same size , but a deeper V cut to it. 30 Seconds later I had my belt, and no more squeeling.

Best I can tell, without knowing what motor you specifically have, it looks like your Volvo part number is 3857835, but as Niagara mentioned, taking the belt to your local auto store may be your most easiest or convenient option..

Owners manual states to only use heavy duty marine belts.
Is this a marketing scheme, or are automotive belts made to a lower quality than marine?

Its a scam. While there are a few things on an boat engine that HAVE to be marine rated, belts isn't one of them.

I agree it is a scam to pay $40 for a VP belt.
I took my alternator and Power Steering belts to Autozone and got a generic replacement for $7 each.
My Horizon 180 with the 5 liter engine uses a 49 inch alternator belt (generic part number 49017) and a 46 inch p/s belt (generic part number (15460).
Just ask to go back to their belts and match them up. Then save the generic part number for future reference.
Good luck Rob
