As the boating season is getting closer I have been preparing. This weekend I was planning on hooking up the muffs and running the engine to check for any issues that may occur. Basically I want to save myself a two hour round trip if something goes wrong on my first splash of the season. My question is there anything I need to know about running the engine on muffs other than do not rev the engine. I just plan on letting her idle to get the oil temp and pressure up. Any advice or tips with this would be greatly appreciated.

Just make sure ya got good connection with the muffs, with good water flow coming out the exhaust. I rev mine slightly, not WOT, but just bump it occasionally to make sure all linkages are smooth and fuel flow isn't impeded. While it's idling, check everything you can see, hose connections, belts, gaskets, etc. Work all you lights, horn, radio, wipers, etc.

Other than that, not much too it.

There are cheap muffs and good muffs. Cheap ones only feed one side of the drive. Get good ones that feed both sides, they cost $5-10 more. Turn the hose on FULL.

I picked up the best ones (both side) I could find at Academy at lunch today.

Merc (Quicksilver) makes one that has a rod that goes through the water intake and cannot fall or slip off. If I had a Volvo or Bravo with the impeller on the engine I'd put the muffs on first, then disconnect the raw water intake hose that goes from the transom to the impeller at the pump and fill that hose with water to make the impeller prime as fast as possible, re-connect it and then turn on the water.

Most of the V6 and V8 engines with raw water cooling use a supply pump and the normal engine manufacturer's circulation pump. The supply pump is normally eeither in the outdrive, belt driven beside the front of the engine, or mounted on the front of the engines crankshaft. Sometimes it takes a little time for the water to get through the outdrive, through the supply pump, to the engine to fill it up, and start to come out the outdrive. This can be 20 - 30 seconds or more after engine start. in addition to seeing the water coming out the bottom side of the outdrive, you should hear a difference when the water enters the exhaust system and muffles the exhaust. I had a situation one year where the engine did not fill with water nearly this quickly. I ran the engine twice for about 40 seconds each time without seeing water coming out. After filling the block with water the engine acted normally then, and for many years afterward. Since then I have pulled the large hose at the thermostat (or another connection near the top of the engine) to fill the engine block so it does not lack cooling during start up.

The Muff used should fit snugly and stay in place. When the water is turned on you should have water escaping between the muff and the outdrive. This should continue while running the engine. I never rev the engine above about 1200 to 1500 rpm, except for maybe a brief check to see that the engine accelerates well, and to satisfy my desire to hear it. 8) You may notice that the engine requires more water than the hose is providing, and water is not escaping from the muff at higher RPM. I also install a small garden hose shut off valve between the hose and the muff to reduce the time and distance between turning the water on and starting the engine.

As previousy stated, watch and listen for leaks and anything unusual.

I like having someone outside boat watching water flow..that way if there's an issue I can shut it down.

For first start I hookup water...pull safety clip on ignition and spin motor over for a couple short rotations....helps get fluids moving before cranking.

Due to the weather and a honey-do list I had to put it off until this coming weekend. Thanks for all the good advice.
