Enjoyed first shake out ride of my second year with my new used boat. Short season last year, boat winterized properly thanks to this forum and patient regular posters, and it started right up this spring.

My 98 Has the VDO guage cluster which is known to have issues, I did add a new ground wire but it didnt change any symptoms...

The guages work on occasion, tach seems to be accurate, speedo wanders from 0-correct even when running in the driveway, volt meter acts appropriately temp guage is my biggest question.

Replaced thermostat when bringing the boat out of storage this week but its acting the same as the old thermostat (which looked bad visually but may or may not have worked properly)

it runs cold, then creeps up to the red line hangs for a minute then falls to cold, repeating every 1-3 minutes. Putting my hand on the risers seems to validate the guage, (cold to touch, gets hot (almost to the point of untouchable but not quite) then rapidly cool again.

My limited understanding of thermostats is it opens enough to hold a temp not 'cycling' open and closed.

Long descriptiion for a short question, is this normal (ish) or is there a place to start troubleshooting? Find it hard to beleive I got a bad thermostat out of the box but not hard to believe I screwed something else up. Boat runs very well, ran for about an hour on plane. Not too worried about it but curious if anyone else has a similiar experience

If you have the time, take out the T-Stat and let it run on the muffs. Temp should be in the 120-130 range. If it still does the hotcoldhotcold thing, it might be a worn impeller not moving enough water. Or a blockage in one of the hoses.
