Had the kids tubing this weekend and noticed oil by the drive unit. Green lube was leaking out of the upper cap on the top of the unit. I will try to attach pix.

Anyone have a clue what this is? Can I fix it myself?

Also, I hear my bilge pump running, but it appears not to be pumping water.

Thanks for any help!

I cannot see any see any green lube in the photos.

If you are talking about some kind of slime coming out from under the plastic cover that you removed: That cover is not at all water proof. The whole cavity under the cover can fill with lake water, and drain out when you pull the boat out. Perhaps that was just lake slime you were seeing?

If you are talking about oil coming out of the fill screw at the top... then that is bad. For the oil level to rise that high, could mean that water is entering the oil...perhaps with a leaky prop shaft seal. You need to check the oil for sign of milkiness at the top and bottom fill screws. If you have water in the oil, you need to have the drive disassembled and seals replaced.

Or did oil only leak out of the top screw when the engine was tilted all the way up. If so, then you just need a new gasket under that fill screw...but still check the water in the oil.

Thanks for your response. What I saw is oil leaking from the seam (of the cover I have removed in the pics) from various places. Upon removing the cover, I could see traces of the oil around the area the cover protects. So you are saying oil in this area is not normal.

Also, I removed the fill cap with the dipstick and I don't see any milky color or evidence water is inside.

Water sits below the oil.
Drain a little from the bottom drain plug.

That is a good quick way to tell, just quickly remove the drain plug and if milky/oil mix comes out first followed by normal looking oil then you have your answer. The drive has to come off and get pressure tested and re-sealed.

OK. Will do this tomorrow and see. How much about are we talking to test/reseal if there is water in the oil. So I don't overpay.

THanks everyone.

That's hard to say because it depends on what seal(s) are leaking and how much labor it takes to replace them.
I change the gear oil each season and always look for water it it, I had to get the drive resealed about 8 years ago but its been fine since then.
