I have a 92 with an OMC drive. Coming off the lake today my wife loaded the boat on the trailer shut it off and started to raise the our drive. It went up part way then stopped. It was up enough to get us out of the water and back to camp. I nuts around with it and it goes down fine. Up it trips the circuit breaker mounted to the pump right away. Even after I reset the beaker it won't do anything. I go back in and wiggle some wires. Still nothing I tapped on the pump and nothing. Then out of the blue it goes up again for about another inch and trips the breaker again.

Where do I start?? I know nothing about the tilt motor.

If I hit the reset and go and hold in the bottom to raise the outdrive. The circuit breaker pops??!

find the connector for the trim, mine is on the top starboard side of the engine. disconnect the connectors and make sure they are not corroded or have any debris , moisture also check the wires very closely. They get bounced around pretty good and they can tend to get cracks in the wire and then short out on the top of the motor. last week mine came loose and would let me go down on the trim but not up. zip tie came loose and it bounced apart. I reconnected mine and put a hose clamp just snug around it and re zip tied it stationary. Good luck

If the circuit breaker pops that is a sign that the motor is drawing more current than the breaker is designed to handle. As noted above, check all the connections starting from the battery, battery grounds, relay grounds, etc for corrosion. This includes looking at the wire strands to see if corrosion traveled up the wires. If they are good then the motor itself may be getting old and drawing too much current, might be time for a rebuilt one.

I found the harness you were talking about. It's a water tight harness and it actually had zip ties on it already. It was loose. It goes up now. Thank you for your help.

Good deal. I was actually on the lake trying to load my boat back on trailer when mine stopped working. Had to go find a dock and mess around to figure it out. It was getting late. Thank god I figured it out.

Is there a way to over ride the hydraulics in case of a emergency? Besides unhooking he hoses?

I don't know if there is any manual override valve on the pump.
You could pull the pin that attaches the cylinder rods to the drive and tie the cylinders up so they don't fall...then lift the drive with a rope from the tow-eye. Would not be easy.

Ya I need to check into this issue as well, I was actually stuck leaving my boat in the water due to not wanting to tear of the lower unit of my boat. luckily I figured it out, but man what if something else happens... I like your idea. Going to start keeping the proper tools for the job handy. :)
