Hey Guys, been looking and was wondering , with my boat setup and trailer, I realized the I dont have the hooks on my trailer to hook my tie downs to , I have just been wrapping them around the bottom bar on the trailer. I was If I should be using a Gunwale strap across the back of the boat and just hook it to the trailer that way? Whats your thoughts. I can get a nice gunwale tiedown strap. Just want to make sure its secure the proper way.

For your size boat, I highly recommend boat buckles... retractable straps. I've been using mine for 4 years now without issue (fresh water only). At Bass Pro or cabela's you can usually get all 3 (bow, stern) for around $100. I think 230 Mike has them on his, as much ribbing as we've given him about being trailer bound in the past.

Walt , do you have some info on them , I have never heard of them. After reading up on the Gunwale strap I am a little worried about the strap rubbing the boat. How do they hook up? can you send me a pic? Thanks.

This is in the stowed position for launch/retrieve. The hook attaches to the stern tie-down and ratches down when in use.

I had brackets welded on to mount them to, but that's overkill. They're meant to be mounted directly to the rail.

The backs of them look like this:

They sell them in pairs for the transom, and singly for the bow.

These are so much nicer and convenient than ratcheting straps, I can't believe more people don't have them. Mine aren't color coordinated with my hull like Walt's though. :D

The stern strap is a pain to use....you hook one side and walk around to hook other and the opposite side unlatches from the trailer...it's a two person gig....go with the ratchet style as shown and you will be much happier....and yes the over the top stern strap will rub going down the road.....ever see those straps vibrating in wind on an 18 wheel rig.

Ya thats what I was thinking. I dont need to rub the poor boat raw. Its funny I have been hooking my straps around the back bar and never realized to hook then in the holes on the roller. hmmm My next question is. My boat hangs of the back of the trailer by atleast 6-8 inches, I see everyones boat way up where the straps pull straight down, Mine is all they way up to the bow strap and on the roller and it hangs past the trailer. hmm anyone else have this issue? Thanks guys

That's not good. If your bunks don't support the transom, you can end up with a "hook" in the running surface which can cause porpoising.

Do you have a Four Winns trailer?

Ya its the original boat trailer (fourwinns), It sets all the way up on the trailer, It looks fine its just different some of the others. The drain plug is up past the roller, My Transom sticks out past yours . look and see what you think.

Oh, that. Your running surface is all the way up on the bunks though, right? Said another way, the actual transom is the straight vertical surface that the drive mounts to. That's what needs to be on the bunks, everything behind that is on it's own. :)

Edit: Looking closer (it's hard to say for sure from that pic), it looks like the bunks come back just to the edge of the running surface - which is typical for these trailers, and adequate (barely). You do want to be sure and load the boat up as far as you possibly can.

Ohh ya shes on the trailer all the way forward, Hook is on the bottom of the front roller. The Transom is on bunks, its just with my year of boat they body rolls out farther for the swim platform. My tie down hooks are out farther on the back of the boat from the hooks on the frame. Like you said the rest of the body sticks out from the trailer.
