Hi everyone. I'll be buying my first boat and the H190 is towards the top of my list, however, at this point only based on pictures, the FW brand name, features and options, and looks. Have not seen one in person yet, my local dealer does not have one in stock at this time.

I've looked at some others in the same price range/category, ie Chaparral H2O 19 Sport, Sea Ray 190 Sport, Glastron GT205, among a couple others.

There is a dealer about 3 hours away that I will likely be visiting to look at the boat in person, but I thought I would ping this forum to get peoples thoughts/opinions.

Thanks for any input.

Cordially,

Steve Anderson

Also don't rule out Monterey. I'm a FW fan but everyone should consider all options.

Monterey 204FS no questions asked in the 30k/20ft bowrider range.

Mercruiser power plant. I owned that new fancy Volvo Penta SX-A outdrive for a short while. Horrid.

Monterey makes a nice boat. I almost bought a 214fs years ago.

My opinion might be biased since they're a locally built boat that test in my father's marina and I've had a few talks to their lead designer...

Over on the chap forums the H20's are popping up right and left. Great boats. So far no reported issues.

Again no matter what you get get a Mercruiser drive package. Serious. The SX-A is loaded with issues with it's external trim pump.

Mercruiser:
Cheap to fix. Impeller lasts years. They all come with drive lube monitors. Their trim pump doesn't need to be replaced every other year because it sits in the water instead of in the boat. EVERYONE carries parts. It's getting to the point where you'll be able to pickup impellers at walmart soon.

Volvo Penta:
Trim pump sits in the water, leaks, needs to be replaced occasionally. $1200 if you don't have warranty. Impeller lasts 1-2 years. No drive lube monitoring, you can't check the level if you're wet slipped. Very expensive to fix anything, and nothing is in stock anywhere.

How is that bullshit?

I have to disagree about better built. Maybe in the SX/DP-M days, hell yes. In the -A days? No. The trim pump is moved outside. You can't check the fluid levels and they will all leak one day. Some sooner than others. Mine did. Volvo is still replacing them under a goodwill warranty even if you don't have one. That's not going to last forever.

Impeller easy to change on a volvo yes, but a mercruiser drive (alpha) they can last 5+ years without breaking a sweat. You'll go through at least two $50 volvo impellers for that one $30 alpha kit. Also the $30 kit comes with new surfaces and seals. When your volvo pump wears out it's $400 to replace. There's been quite a few people on here that have already been down that road.

People say Volvo is better... I guess to justify the cost? Volvo has had two big blunders in the last few years. The XDP drives and the new outboard trim pump. No to mention their fuel pump woes. How many mercruiser owners do you hear about with fuel pump issues? With their trim pump leaking water and not working? With their drive bellows getting worn open by the driveshaft? Having to purchase a new $400 water pump because the shaft leaks? None.

They're both mechanical and made by man, not God. So there will be issues with them eventually. I've owned two mercruisers one my current Volvo/Penta. The impellers on both will last they same, but should be changed every year for salt and can be stretched to 2 for fresh. I've swapped annually and the VP is way easier....much worth the 20 dollars difference to not have to break apart the lower unit to change. No bellows failure on the VP, but two failures on the Merc. One liked to have sank me in middle of a storm.

No low unit probs with the VP, but had gears shoot out the side on my Alpha in my first Sea Ray. VP has no shift cable boot that can sink your boat if left slipped and it fails, which was second bellows/boot failure with my 2nd Merc/Alpha drive....the Alpha drives in the Mercs run
hotter than the VP's so if you make long runs a drive shower is suggested. My Las Merc had a trim pump failure.

Summary..both units are good and are in tons of boats...every inboard/outboard you see will be one or the other so your fine with either. This really is like a Ford or Chevy debate and both of them break too.

I will strongly suggest that whichever boat or setup you go with, get the remote oil filter kit....its a must unless you have rubber stretchy arms to reach the filter.

It's an option where you use a remote control , push the "change" button and it automatically changes your oil and removes and replaces the filter. Range is about 200 ft. so you can sit in your living room and push the button without getting your hands dirty.
