Hi all,

I have a mate looking at buying the below boat & was wondering whether the V6 has sufficient torque or is the V8 mandatory in a boat this size?
It will be used as an all-rounder with some tow sports.

Cheers.

That size and year would be seriously underpowered. It wouldn't even be marginal for tow sports. I test drove a 21' with a 5.0 and that would have been iffy. 350 ci or better IMO. good luck!

Here is the Spec Sheets for that year: (I have found the Four Winns specs to be quite accurate).
http://www.fourwinns.com/upload/Documents/Catalogs/2008/FastFacts_2008.pdf
The 4.3L had 220HP, and the 5.0L also had 220HP (or 260HP with the 5.0MPI).

The boat is only 3070 lbs, so I would not call it seriously underpowered. I think you would be fine. Specs show a top speed of 48mph. This is probably correct with 1 or 2 people only. 6 people top speed is probably about 43-44.

However, keep in mind that Four Winns owners seem to like a lot of power, so the lower HP versions take a big hit in resale value. Price accordingly.

21' or over, I wouldn't want anything less than a 5.7. At the least, have him sea trial it with a load & activities that are representative of how he'll use the boat.

My 2005 210 (22') has the fuel injected 5.0 which is 270 hp. I love the boat. I don't feel it is underpowered. That being said, I do plan to move to a 4/5 blade prop for some extra low end (see my thread in "Engine, drive, prop"). So there is definitely room for improvement with the 5.0. If my current performance was all I could get, it would be fine. I pull tubers, wakeboarders, slalom skiiers without any trouble. Top speed in mid 40's is fine with me. I don't believe I would buy my boat with a 4.3, however.

My 88 200 is about the same size (20' 9") but lighter with a narrower beam (2680 lbs, 7'8" beam). It had the 4.3 with a 4 bbl Quadrajet. It performs well but for water sports you'd want more. And, I'd say go at least with the 5.7.
Mine is slower than it should be probably because of both age and layers of bottom paint that add weight and drag. The iron 4.3 is an excellent engine, compact in size, durable and inexpensive to repair. And I might add, stands up to an overheat pretty well ;)

Now that back end of the H-210, I'd have an issue with. I can imagine how tight it would have been to get in there and replace the exhaust flappers in the Y pipe like I did after the overheat. You'd most likely have to remove the exhaust manifold on the starboard side to get the starter out (had to replace that too, got full of salt water). No reason why it has to be built that way. I'd find a way to cut out the glass that the battery access doors fit into and fab up thick aluminum supports that are removable to support the fiberglass above that. Imagine having to re-engineer your boat just so you can fix it. For shame Four Winns.......

I always thought that was dumb of them to advertise these numbers.

My guess is that even though the larger engines put out more HP, you would actually consume less fuel than the 4.3 for the size of the boat as the engine would not need to work as hard for the same speed. A friend has a 22' Sea Ray Sundancer with the 4.3L and when we took both boats out, he was doing 4,000 RPM or so to keep up with a 26mph cruise speed, where I was doing about 2,400 RPMs. He worked his engine a lot harder than I had to work mine. His boat weighs about 5,000 loaded, so there was about 1,000 lb difference loaded. He burned almost double the amount of fuel for the day.

I don't know much about the boat, but I would say 4.3 is probably not ideal.

Like trucks, boats need torque and not just outright horse power, which is why I started this thread.
Thanks for all the responses.

OK..the 4.3 will be under torqued. Not sure of prices there but here that boat is just as much overpriced as under powered. With the size and desired for water sports I would hold out for a 5.7 or better.

Working on them all is a twister game...

The 4.3 is the GXI model so that would be fuel injected with 225 HP... the 5.0GL is carb at 220 HP but the 5.0Gxi is fuel injected and 270HP. This is still back in the years that Carb motors were around. The suggested motor from FW was the 5.0GXi at 270HP so the other two options would make the boat a bit underpowered
