New to me FW

Pretty proud day. I've been looking and drooling over boats the past few years. Today my wife and I payed a visit to a local boat dealer near our home and there sat a 2000 Horizon 200 that was virtually flawless. It has a 5.7 volvo with very low hours. When we climbed in to look it over my wife says "let's buy it". Really threw me for a loop. I honestly thought we were just window shopping. So needless to say I found a sales person, made a offer, asked for a bunch of free stuff, and they hesitantly excepted. I'm really excited and can't wait to pick it up Monday afternoon. The only problem I can see is looking at it in my shop and knowing I can't put it in the water for a few months.

Congrats! That's a great model for first time buyers. Welcome to the club, you'll find lots of good info here and great people too. Soo, where ya boat at? I take it in a winter climate since we are all going crazy waiting for this dang winter to end. Oh, and lets see some pics of your new baby

I will definitely pat pics when I pick it up. We will primarily boat on Raccoon Lake, in west central Indiana. Most people consider it a mud puddle! But we live close enough I think I could hook to the boat in my shop and be on the water in less than 10 minutes. Anyone have some insight on things to look for on a Volvo 5.7 GS. Is there anything in particular I need to keep my eye on?

Well the good thing is, if ya get adventurous, there are several areas you can trailer to from your location.

That's a pretty bullet proof engine, small block chevy with 4bbl carb. What kinda outdrive does it have? SX, DP, Oceans X (hopefully not that one)?

Do you plan on doing your own maintenance and winterizing and such? You mentioned a shop, so I assume you will be. That's prob the best way to keep your boat in tiptop shape. Nobody is going to fuss and fret over every nut and bolt like an owner will.

I believe it is a SX. I say shop, it is a very glorified garage. I built it this past year, we farm and I wanted a space big enough to get a few tractors a combine and maybe even a semi in all at once. But now the boat will take some priority there. I'd like to do all of my maintenance myself, but ill have to do some research on all of that. The nice thing with being stored in the shop is it is warm in the winter and comfortable int the summer. Any must haves that you recommend aside from the standard safety equipment?

If you can get a factory shop manual and go thru all the maintenance points:
Impeller
Tune up
Motor oil
Drive oil
Batteries and charging system
Bilge pump

Also
Same for trailer
Bearings
Tires
Brakes

Being a farmer you probably know more about equipment maintenance than most of us combined. Much of the same applies, especially treating the fuel to prevent ethanol woes.

One thing to consider is swapping the impellor yearly if your boating in chocolate water....I swap mine every two years but water is pretty clear and only hit fresh water lakes. I would make sure that's been serviced for your first season.

Post pics and welcome aboard....that's the size and style boat I've always had. Perfect for swimming, water sports and cruising around. Not so much for rough weather days and sleeping over night on, but I'm not interested in either of those activities.

congrats on your new horizon.well untill it warms up you and your wife can get a few beverages hop up on the boat and check out all the seating arrangements. so when you do get to go out, you and the captain (let them think they are ) know where you will be hanging out while on the water

Congrats on the purchase. We sold our 99 200 last August. It had the Volvo 5.7 with SX drive. Great combination & lots of fun.

I have the Volvo 5.7 GS in my 2000 Horizon 240. Mine has the Holley 2 barrel carburetor which is very reliable, as well as easy to rebuild. Great engine and outdrive.

In 2000, you might have the Charcoal colored engine (up to 1999) or Red (2000 and newer). Either way, it should be the Vortec chevy engine.

At 14 years old, and fresh water usage, it might still have the original exhaust manifolds on it. If so, I would change them right away, because a "rust-through" failure of the exhaust manifolds results in water entering the engine through the exhaust valves. Very bad. New exhaust manifolds and risers can be had for as little as $600 for the whole set, which you can install yourself. Just search this forum for some sources.

I'm glad I found this forum! There is a lot of good info here. Thank you everyone for the warm welcome. I'm really excited to introduce my two little girls to summer on the water! I was planning on picking it up today but the dealer said when the weather breaks they will have it water ready and we will take it out together to go over things since it is our first. Plus why not let them store it for free.
