Every year I use a normal craftsman 3/8 ratchet with a 5/16 deep socket to pull off the 4 hex bolts holding the impeller cavity together and it always takes a very long time since it requires so many turns. Sometimes you get lucky and can turn the screws by hand but usually they bind a little and you have to use the ratchet again. Short of hauling my air compressor over to the boat and using an air ratchet, I wonder what else might be a better tool to get at these 5/16 bolts? I'd like to be able to have this cavity apart in seconds, not 15 minutes... The access cavity behind the seat is what makes the tool choice limited...

If you are referring to the Merc B1 impeller, I took mine out and ultimately reversed the bolts so they are facing forward instead of aft (drilled/re-tapped). Used SS Allen head screws so I could get one of those ball wrenches in there. Makes my life much easier as I don't have to remove the alt, fuel filter assy, upper, lower intake, outdrive... you get the idea.

Not the best I'm sure but I loosen with ratchet then use a short handled nut driver....the pain is dropping it in the bilge and fishing it out.

my short handle nut driver is too long, but I know they make shorter... i think i'm going to buy a stubby t-handle ratchet for next year... that might work better.
