Post subject:  fuel tank issue

I just bought a 92 Horizon 190. The previous Owner told me he was getting paint type flakes in the fuel when he filled the tank, and they were getting into the carb. He rebuilt the carb, and kept tank at half full and didnt seem to have issues. I want to fix the issue, so I drained all of the gas, and pulled the tank, thinking it was delaminating or something. Fuel was all good. No evidense of flakes. Tank appears to be very sound. Any ideas on where the flakes might be coming from ? What can I clean the tank with ? Ever hear of anything like this before ?

A '92 probably has an aluminum tank. I would carefully remove the 5 screws that hold down the fuel level sending unit and lift out the sending unit. Then take a bright LED flashlight and look in the tank. If its got floating flakes in the gas I'd have it professionally cleaned out. If its clean your old fuel lines may be de-laminating it might be time to replace them all.

The tank on this one is plastic. I have it out of the boat now, and I have found no evidense of flakes in the gas removed. The fuel lines and filter are all new as of last year. Sending unit will be removed this evening to see if there is anything there. Wondering about filler cap area and vent line now.

For what it's worth, on my previous boat I noticed red "flakes" in the fuel filter that I traced back to the plastic gas cans I was using. From then on, I would just fill up at the pump instead of transfer. Might those be the type of flakes you are seeing? IF it's getting past the filter, I would say the lines themselves are suspect and due for replacement.

I havent seen the flakes myself, but from what I am told, they are kind of a grey, sludgy looking flake. He found it on the prefilter to the carb and in the carb itself. none in the water filter.
