Wife was towing our boat from Denver to Seattle and upon inspection at the Oregon border, they asked if she was aware of the purple fluid all over one of the trailer rims. Luckily, she was only 2 miles from a Les Schwab.

They said that a "sleeve" had failed allowing the oil to leak out and ended up ordering a new axle from FourWinns. Needless to say, the boat has been there for 2.5 weeks and I'm going back to pick it up on Sunday.

The tech at Les Schwab said that the replacement they sent out was a standard greased bearing (vs the oil-filled one).

Anyone had anything similar happen? We still have the original axle on the rear.

I personally would not trust Les Schwab. I have more horror stories of over paying and shoddy service than I care to go into.

There are no "sleeves" in oil bath hubs. Are they talking about the inner seal because they can leak and spew oil everywhere, including the rims? But why replace the entire axle though? Was it damaged or just leaking somewhere? Purple fluid? That seems odd too. Lots of questions but I guess we need more of the story before we can truly help.

Thanks in advance

A couple miles without lube could prob do some damage to the axle. I had a wheel bearing fail on the highway and pulled over immediately after I saw the grease explosion in my side view mirror and managed to prevent any harm to the axle. I would think a couple of miles could chew it up pretty good if the outer bearing was destroyed.

Mine started leaking when I made five hour drive home from dealer after purchase in 2010. I called the dealer and mechanic said to swap oil with standard weight drive oil. It hasn't leaked a drop since and hubs stay cool....they sent extra seals overnight and they're still in drawer.
