The ground issue was on the actual electronics panel/board behind dash. The fix was to send it to a company in Georgia who would fix the ground. Most people just chuck it, spend $150 on a Faria gauge set, make a new insert, and have a sweet looking dash. I am awful at electrical issues, but I know my VDO has a questionably speedo and tach, all the other gauges work.
If you don't wanna spend the scratch on a new gauge set, buy a temp gauge at autozone and hook it up at the engine to double check your dash gauge. Or get a IR temp gun, that way you can always use it to check various temps at various places on the engine.
