Post subject: | Temperature |
Hello, I am new member and glad to have found this owners group. I have an 1997 H170 with a 4.3 VP. The temperature gauge is giving me fits. I replaced the thermostat and it worked perfectly..............for about 30 minutes!!! It either does not work at all or goes to about 120 degrees and sits there. Any suggestions or thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Dan |

Welcome! Temp gauges (actually, gauges in general) are always a subject of probs here. First off, do you have the VDO gauge cluster? If so, that may be the problem, VDO was known to have a ground issue. If not, it could be the temp sending unit, bad wiring, etc. |

Yes, it is a VDO gauge cluster. Any suggestions on how to check and correct the grounding issue?? Thanks, |

The ground issue was on the actual electronics panel/board behind dash. The fix was to send it to a company in Georgia who would fix the ground. Most people just chuck it, spend $150 on a Faria gauge set, make a new insert, and have a sweet looking dash. I am awful at electrical issues, but I know my VDO has a questionably speedo and tach, all the other gauges work. If you don't wanna spend the scratch on a new gauge set, buy a temp gauge at autozone and hook it up at the engine to double check your dash gauge. Or get a IR temp gun, that way you can always use it to check various temps at various places on the engine. |
