Post subject:  size of boat and the largest waves you have been caught in??
Hey guys , was wondering how big your boat was and what the largest waves you have been caught out in. How did the boat handle it as well. I went out the the Islands over the holiday's (Bass Islands/ Put - in -Bay) . Tried to get out early enough yesterday morning to beat the weather and ended up getting caught in 3'- 4' waves.. One hell of a ride. I kept the front cover over our open bow and kept the bow up and it actually handled it good. I only went about 5-10 mph. This is only a Horizon 180 Rs. I've had her out on 1 and 2's but never the 3 and 4's. Made it safely .... wet .. but safe. This is where good maintenance on the boat is a huge safety factor. I would have never thought about it if the boat didn't run properly.

Same scenario, coming back in from Huntington Bay to Northport Bay, 3-4' waves wind against tide. A wild ride. Thank God I did not lose power. Deep Vee of the '88 H-200 handeled it well. It was the year before I fixed the deck and stringers (2005). Heard a big bang when I came off the last wave. When I started taking the boat apart that fall, I found that 3/4 gas tank mounts had rotted off. The bang was the tank sliding around! When I rebuilt it I used rot proof mahogany stringers for the gas tank mounts up against the main stringers. The original construction was just pine firring strips lol..
This is why I say upgrade your bilge pumps and rig up an extra emergencey one (Rule 2000 gph) wired up so you can drop it in the bilge and hook it up to the batt with alligator clips and a bilge hose to hang over the side.
Those bitty 500 gph ones will not cut it then...

12 alum jon boat and i have been in 3' white caps in the charleston caught in an afternoon sea breeze and squall that blew in while fishing.. it was a fast idle and had to float roll over the waves.. It was sporty to say the least.. i have been in 14'ers off shore in dads 45 carolina custom years back fishing and that was also sporty. but the jon boat did not have navigation, bilge pumps, FLOTATION to say the least so i think it was worse and that 3 mile ride took forever having to stop and bail with a big gulp cup. i have been caught in a lightening storm in an aluminum jon boat before also..

I was off the coast of cape cod in chatham in my 17' glastron outboard deep V when there was a hurricane off shore a couple years ago. (the one right after sandy and was quite a few miles out) there were 5-6 foot rollers... the coast would disappear when you were in the trough... Was a awesome time. The rollers weren't trouble except when they crashed near the shore which was scary going out the channel. We were searching for great whites and thought we found one when we saw a fin in the water. Well it was just a sun fish. I have pictures and don't say its a sun fish... :D
Now Long Island sound has nasty quick weather and I was caught in 3-4 footers in the same boat.. Not so much fun since those waves are quick frequency.. Was a bow up hull speed LONG ride back...

Almost got swamped in my dinghy this weekend. I was finishing in a shallow spot on the CT river when a HUGE boat went by. I don't pay much attention because the dinghy usually just rolls over them but this wake broke since it was only a couple feet deep and I had my stern facing the wave.. UGH OH! I pulled anchor and the wave broke but the little dinghy just rode it like a surf board then over the wave I went. I only took a little water. Was amazed I made it without having to bail it. Lesson learned, keep bow facing the river ALL the time.

Come on Ray share your story!! Holy cow Babbot, 5-6'ers that would be a ride and a half... I was amazed when we were coming back to mainland in all the waves how this 35-40 boat came trucking through and got right up on us and cut right in front us, Through some huge waves. My wife had a one fingered wave for them. The whole lake and they have to ride up our butts. They seen we were going really slow and rolling up and down in the trough. Oh well some people..

Well, the biggest single wave was 8' with the Horizon 240 going out Boynton Inlet last summer.

It was 3-5' seas in the ocean that day, but with the outgoing tide in the inlet, the waves were getting pushed up to 5-6' at the mouth of the inlet. My brother and I went over a 5', then a 6', then the next one was pushing up and ready to break. While still coming down the back side of the 6 footer, we were faced with an 8' wall of water about 6 feet in front of us that looked like it was going to break into the bow. I gunned it to try to get the bow higher, and pierced through the wave about 3 feet below the top, and about 10mph head on. We both said Oh-Shit and ducked below the windshield and held on. Got quite a ride up as the bow split the top of the wave open on the way up. The FW made an impressively smooth landing on the back side of that monster, but we had been thrown about 30 degrees off course to the right, even though I thought I took it head on. Spray was everywhere, but there was no significant amount of water in the boat because of the way the bow split the wave open. I was very impressed.

Corrected course for the next few waves, which we were relieved to see were only 5' , and then subsided to 3-5 as we got away from the Inlet. After a short ride, we went back in the same Inlet, and had a blast going with the waves instead of against them.

Last summer - Lake Ontario from Toronto Islands to Oakville with an East wind - 6' waves for an hour or so.
This summer - Lake Simcoe from the Trent canal to the Narrows. 4-5' confused sea with white caps everywhere.

Once got caught on the lake in a heavy thunderstorm where the wind brought up what I estimated to be 3 footers. That is not all that large, but I was in my dad's old 17 foot runabout that I always called a "wave slapper." Add to it that the throttle linkage broke/bound up to where I could only run it at around 1K RPM max and I had some quick thinking to do. In that boat and in those conditions I was feeling like Deadliest Catch.

The hull design of the larger boats is key for the big waves. Most of you probably do not know what a "Carolina Custom Design" is. So I will enlighten you. It is a Carolina's designed and built boat bases off of a field plow and yes the bow looks like a plow. And plow right thru the waves is just what they will do. Extreamly sharp and deep V that rapidly transitions to a low dead rise transom some have as little as 5* in the transom. They are fast durable and deliver a dry ride of a cadilac.

My dad had a 45' for 15 years as his charter boat while I was growing up. And these hull designs can handle wanes much larger than factor built hulls of even larger lengths. Where this hull shines. Here are some pics. It's crazy the big waves these boats can literally plow right thru and keep a dry ride.
