This may be a stupid question for some of you but I was not able to find concrete answer regarding this so I am going to ask anyway. I need to replace the fuel filter on a Volvo Penta 5.7 Gi but I haven’t done it before. I looked at the manual and it basically said to disconnect the battery, unscrew the filter, lubricate the seal with oil on the new filter and screw it in. My concern with this is that won’t this method trap air? Some places online that I could find said to add fuel to the new filter. Others said don’t add fuel, just make sure to wait for the fuel pump to build up pressure after turning the ignition on. I figured some of you guys have done this and could share your experience.

Is this a fuel injected engine? If so its important to fill that filter with gas (be really careful) because the electric fuel pumps pull gas through the filter, unlike an automotive system where it is pushed to the fuel system by a pump in the gas tank. So if the filter is full of air, its going to be hard for the system to prime if its sucking air. I have read of some forum members having to bleed air out after changing these filters. On a carbed engine I also would fill it with gas, I always do and it has always started after a bit longer cranking time.

I was going to pour the gasoline from the old filter into the new one.

Well if there's any crap in it, or water, that might not be too good, I use clean gas from my gas can for all my 4 stroke yard stuff (mower, pressure washer, leaf vaccum, generator, etc). 9 small engines around the house lol, half are 2 strokes though.

Thanks for the advice. Yes it's fuel injected.

I replaced the filter once and I didnt fillwith gas and it started sputtering and dying when I cranked her over, so I always fill the filter with gas since . The only fix to the problem after my fuel system sucked in all the air was to take the plastic cover to the engine off and bleed the air out of the fuel system. I also did the same to the fuel pump, afterwards she ran like a champ. Make sure if you do this the engine is cold and the batteries are disconnected because I was really surprised how much gas came out of that fitting when I pushed it in.
