Hi all,
Just wondering what product is best to protect the Gatorbyte finish on my trailer?

Cheers, Craig

I've actually never seen one up close only on the F/W website. It is some kind of a coating on a galvanized trailer, is that right? I'd just give it a really good flushing with fresh water after you pull the boat out. That, and spraying all the fittings with corrosion inhibitor is all I have done and my old Load Rite looks very good for a trailer used in salt water 100% of the time....

Thanks for your reply Lou.
Not totally sure as I haven't had the boat / trailer that long.
It appears to be some sort of spray on plastic type coating over the gal trailer.
I do wash the trailer off thoroughly after being in salt water, however it has dulled off.

Cheers, Craig

So you are using a painted trailer in salt water? I would sell it and get a galvanized trailer if you plan on keeping her for a while to avoid the inevitable....rust!!
I have a painted trailer for my horizon and wouldn't dream of using it in salt, as I've seen others and it wasn't pretty.

I think that is a galvy trailer with a spray on coating to make it look better.

It's a PU coating; sticks like **** to a blanket, well, you know what I mean, even when UV degraded it's OK. The problem is the internal part of the box sections. For saltwater, galvanized steel or extruded aluminium I beams construction is he way to go.

Sell it while it looks new and get a aluminum trailer. The plastic traps moisture and will rot the trailer from the inside out, without you knowing it.

Ric might be right here. I don't think that covering a galvanized costing with another coating is really necessary or desirable. Plain old galvanizing works great. 20+ years still going strong.

I wish I could get my galvanised trailers to last 10 years never mind 20+. Half my boating is in Salt, the other fresh. All my previous boats and trailers get a complete wash down every trip regardless, and then parked in the garage, but usually die in about 8-10 years. I am now quite rehearsed in rebuilding boat trailers as I cant afford to buy new...

Thanks for your reply guys.
Still not sure what to put on the trailer top help protect the gatorbyte finish.

The majority of my boating is in salt water. I do wash the boat....and trailer very thoroughly after each outing.

Time will tell re: the gatorbyte finish I suppose.

If I did have a choice originally, I would have gone for an aluminium trailer, however I didn't...it came with the boat.

Have a good weekend all...Craig

I have the galvanized and gatorhyded trailer as most of my boating is salt water. Rinse it with fresh water after each use and it still looks fine after 8 years. Had to replace brakes, bearings etc. over the years but the frame still looks good...

Thanks for your positive feedback.
Do you use any sort of coating on the Gatorhyde?? I have noticed that mine has dulled off.

BTW: It is Gatorhyde, not Gatorbyte.

Cheers, Craig

Is this coating any different to the pickup truck tray liner - Rhino Lining?
