I took my distributor out to get the oil pressure sending unit out... Now I need help setting the timing back. Can anyone tell me the specifications and how to do it? My boat is a 2002 model Horizon 240 with the 5.7 GXi Volvo Penta engine. Thanks!! |

Boatinfo.com Has the manual for your motor. Timing procedure is in it. Website a little wierd to find things but it's there. If you can't find what you need let me know and I'll dig it out |

Anywhere from 8-12* at idle, whatever gives you the best performance. Make sure to follow the procedure to disable the advance for that model dizzy before using a timing light. |

Before you do the timing, you have to get the distributor back in the same orientation that it was when you pulled it out. The easiest way to do this would have been to mark where the dist rotor was on the body of the dist, and then install it the same way. If you didn't do that, then the next best thing to do is to turn the engine over with a remote starter switch till #1 cyl (front left side as you face it) is at TDC. Then when you install the dist, have the the rotor pointing toward #1 cylinder based on the contacts inside the cap. That will get you close enough that it will start. |

Thanks to all for your helpful replies! I think I have it back right where it was (I took pictures but I should have made a mark). Could I run it now or will it hurt the engine? ALSO - My main pulley has a pump attached to it so I don't know how I can easily (and slowly) turn my main to line it up with the timing mark on the engine. Any suggestions would be much appreciated! |

Any suggestions would be much appreciated! With all your spark plugs out, it should not be too hard to turn. You could put a socket on the alternator pulley bolt and turn that pulley (letting the belt pull the engine around). |

utkayaker wrote: Could I run it now or will it hurt the engine? If your distributor was put back in with the rotor pointing at the wrong electrode, then spark would be sent to the wrong cylinder. This could cause bad "back-fires" or kick-backs or similar. Would that hurt the engine...probably not. Could be bad for your starter though. |
