I'm quite happy with the performance of my aluminum prop but it is a bit ragged on some edges so I want to replace it with a similar type. I have a 99 Horizon 220 with a Volvo 5.7GSi/SX. My current prop is a 3-blade 14.3 x 19.

I'd like to think I can replace it myself but before I pull the cotter pin and see what else I need to turn/remove, could someone please let me know just how involved this could be, what gotchas there might be, and if any special tools are needed. I don't have a trailer so I will be doing all of this while standing in the water.

Also, I was wondering if there is a way to convert my prop size to a 3-blade stainless equivalent or do I need to find my WOT, engine size, and look it up online? I didn't know if there was a simple matrix that could be used.

I've never done one on a Volvo SX so people here who have them can chime in but it may be similar to my OMC Cobra:
You need:
Vise grips of pliers to pull out the cotter pin
New stainless steel cotter pin of the right size
Prop wrench
Block of wood to stop the prop from turning
OMC/BRP triple guard grease

Now when doing it in the water (I've done it this way several times because the swim platform on my old H-200 is not so long that it covers the drive when all the way up)
some will say you should tie your prop wrench to the boarding ladder or ski rope hook; and have spares for the thrust washer, prop nut and castellated nut. Because of course you can drop one of them in the water.

OK so I tilt it up all the way with the drive pointing straight back. Climb on the swim platform and tie the prop wrench (big yellow plastic one) to something. Pull out the cotter pin. Carefully remove the castellated nut. Then with one hand wedge a block of wood in between the prop and the drive so it can't turn. Use the prop wrench to loosen the nut. Carefully remove the nut. Now the prop will just lift off but WHOA!! Be careful, there is a thrust washer behind the prop. It may stay on the prop shaft or it may stick to the rear of the prop. So, as soon as you can put you fingers on the inner end of the prop hub in case the washer is stuck to the prop so it doesn't fall in the water.
Next replace the thrust washer on the prop shaft if it came off; if one side has a taper in it, the taper has to match the taper in the shaft. Get the grease and coat the prop shaft with grease. Slide the prop on and thread the prop nut on. Use the block of wood to keep the prop from turning and tighten it good and tight. Then put the castellated nut on so it lines up with the hole on the prop shaft . Put the cotter pin in and spread the ends so it can't come out.
Prop selection you need to know what your wide open RPM is as far as changing pitch.
