Yesterday was a sad day! I sold my 2006 H180 after buying it brand new in 07. It was a great boat and my family and I made some great memories aboard her. Now its time to move on and I am actually looking at a 2004 H210 with the 5.0L MPI Volvo 270hp engine. I was wondering if some of you would be able to let me know how this boat performs with this setup? From the pictures I have seen it looks to be in great shape but needs a good cleaning. Is there anything specific I should watch out for? I am hopefully going to look at it this weekend. I am a family of 5 and the kids love to tube! There will however be additional people aboard at sometime not always and was also wondering how roomy the boat was for say 7 or 8 people? Any input you guys have would be much appreciated.

H210 with 5.0L is underpowered. Adequate at best

I have a 2013 H210 with the 5.7 litre Volvo DP, and it flies . I'm not sure how much difference the 270 would be. But the 210 is an ideal family boat. Big and comfortable.

I have a 2010 H210 w/ a Merc 5.0 mpi - 260 horsepower. With a 1/2 tank of fuel and one other adult I can hit 52 with ideal water conditions. With a full boat load of people and gear, 48 isn't out of the question. It'll pull 3 adults on a big tube no problem. I don't think it's underpowered at all. Go for it!

A buddy of mine has a 2005 H210 with 5.0L V8, he describes it as fine for most of what
we do, but a bit underwhelming when fully loaded, or pulling skiers. Other than that, it
is a great riding hull.

Thanks for your replies! A lot of people said that the 3.0L was not enough for my "old boat" but it did everything I wanted it to and more. I think it will be fine for what I want to do. Right now its listed for 14,900 with less than 300hrs and a trailer. The paint is a little faded but I think it will buff out nicely. Besides a real good cleaning the interior of the boat is in good shape no cracks or tears in the vinyl. The covers are a little worn out buttons have pulled out but repairable I think. The only other thing that has me a little concerned is 1. Its a salt water boat and 2.It has been sitting and stored for a couple years. It has been winterized and maintained at the dealer it was purchased at and before storage ran like new. The boat has a lot of potential and I am sure I can get it looking real good. Just worried about the mechanical stuff. Would this be a big deterrent for anybody here??

Well there are a few things to carefully check out above and beyond the typical boat checks. For one, was the boat just used in salt water or moored/docked in salt (does it have bottom paint?)
This is a critical point because if it was left in salt water it is very important to maintain the bottom paint & anodes on the sterndrive especially. In this case you'd have to check it carefully for corrosion. If it was just run in salt, the drive probably does not have much corrosion but being an 04, it should have gotten a new set of exhaust manifolds/risers about 2 years or so ago, the most I'd go in salt is 7-8 years tops. If the exhaust system was not maintained you can get salt water intrusion into a cylinder. And sitting for a few years, well how long exactly? Was the fuel stabilized? I would make a condition of sale, that the dealer gets it up and running, and you can sea trial it before any money changes hands. Otherwise you could have a pack 'o problems there. Next look at the trailer if its part of the deal. If its a proper salt water trailer (galvanized or aluminum) the frame should be fine but the brakes/springs may need to be redone, if not done already. If its a painted trailer I would not want it. Likely to rust from the inside out and then you have to buy a new trailer.

Yes the bottom is painted and the outdrive looks pretty good! It was slipped at a marina. I was definitely going to have that as a condition in my offer if I decide to do it. I dought the exhaust work was done. The trailer is in great shape. The dealer is the only one who used it. They are right across the street from the marina where it was slipped so that's the only time it's been used. The brakes probably need to be done. I appreciate your help with this!

Post up some pix, of the drive so we can see if you have a chance. Also with the exhaust, take a good look at the joint between the manifold and riser. If you see rust trails on the outside, water could have been leaking on the inside. When you sea trial it, bring an IR temp gun and take readings of the risers, and manifolds. At idle they will be about 90-100*F. After coming off plane, about 135* or so but after idling they should cool down. If they are hotter than that, the risers could be clogging up. Your engine temp should be between 160 and 175, not more than that. If it never comes up to temp you might have a sticky thermostat. Listen carefully to the drive for any abnormal noises (howling, grinding, etc) that might point to a bad gimble bearing. This happens fast if salt water gets in that bellows. I might ask if they would remove the drive (if they balk, I'd pay for the R&R because that's not much but make them pay for any repairs. You don't want to get a bad surprise there. Same with the gear oil, you should be able to take a sample and make sure there's no water in it.

The problem with pics is the boat is over an hour away from me. If I have the time I may try to go tomorrow to take a second look before I make an offer. The gentleman at the marina seemed to be very upfront with me and willing to make the boat right. I just hope the gentleman who owns it is ready to sink some money into it. If not I guess my search for anot her boat will continue.

I think that $14900 for a 2004 H210 would be a good price if it was near perfect and didn't have any of the issues/potential issues you mention. If he hasn't been willing to get it cleaned up, polished, repaired, ready to go, new manifolds, new batteries, etc, then it should probably be about $5000 less.

I had a 220hp 5.0 in my 21ft chaparral cuddy cabin. It was a LARGE boat (tall/heavy). Initially it was a dog, but after some proper tuning it was a rocket. I swapped out to a SS 4 blade prop (vensura) and smart tabs and it felt like I added 100hp. Hit nearly 50mph. Great cruiser setup, I'd get that motor again in a heartbeat.

If you're doing watersports or constantly having 6+ adults you'll need the 300hp V8.

Well I made an offer of $12,500.00 we'll see what happens. As part of my offer was the contingency that he has to bring the boat back to good operational condition. I also made mention that I would like a sea trial as well. The boat is scheduled for maintenance next week. If all goes well hopefully a sea trial shortly after. My luck it will probably be snowing...
