Post subject:  Shift cable replacement on 2005 230 (240 in later years)

I'm pretty sure I need to replace the shift cable on my 2005 H230 with 5.7 Volvo duoprop. Several here have mentioned it is a common item to replace on these. The boat is stiff getting from neutral to forward or reverse. Once in gear the throttle is smooth.

So my question is for the people that have had this cable replaced... are we talking about a cable that goes from the helm throttle/shifter to the motor, or is it from the motor to the outdrive? Or do both need to be replaced? I'm trying to decide if this is something I want to tackle myself or take it into a shop for.

Once the cable is replaced I assume there is some sort of adjustments that need to made to the cable to make sure it is shifting correctly?

Thanks!
Steve

I think there are 2 cables; one from the control to the throttle on the engine and one from the control to the outdrive. The Volvo is different than the Merc Alpha and OMC Cobra that use 2 cables for the outdrive because there is a shifter bell crank on the engine. The Volvo uses one long cable from the control to the outdrive. The cable jacket where it comes out of the transom mount sometimes gets cracks and water can get in and corrodes the cable. The adjustments are important and Id get a factory shop manual if you are doing this yourself.

There are two cables.

Throttle: Teleflex 16' #CC17216
Shift (Original): Teleflex 17' #CC17217
Shift (Recommended): Teleflex 17' TFExtreme #CC63317

The shift cable is the one that tends to get stiff.

I got down in the engine bay to look around tonight and it does look like the shift cable goes straight into the out drive. So does this mean it needs to be pulled to replace the cable or can you get to it with it still mounted in place?

When you change it, pay attention to the hole the cable is in on the shifter at the helm. There are 2 holes that are very close together, and if you use the wrong one it changes the shift throw. I think I just taped the 2 cables together and used the old one to pull the new one in. Its been a while sorry.

+1 for the other posters. The CC172 series cables have a 10-32 threaded end on both ends of the cable. Size 10 (3/16") with 32 threads per inch. The 2 numbers at the end of the part number indicate the length in feet (CC17217 is a 17 foot cable). Teleflex offers two versions. My marine mechanic suggested a different cable he claimed has more flexibility, less lost motion, less friction to move. Its usually listed at retailers or on line as "Uflex" or Ultra flex.

While you are getting ready to change it, look every where you can along the length of the cable to see if it is clamped to other cables or wires. Connecting the cables is usually a great way to replace one cable with another in hard to reach places. Taping the cables together or using a snug fitting flexible hose connecting the cable ends may be ways to help string the cable. Hope this helps.

I believe the shift cable is normally replaced without pulling the drive.

I replaced just my shift cable and it made a huge difference on the smoothness of shifting.

Item 19 in the link shows the outdrive removal procedure and includes the installation of the shift cable at the drive.

Just as others have said, you do not need to remove the drive.

Thanks everyone! I've looked at some more information on this and it looks like something I can tackle. Cable will be here tomorrow but it probably wont be until next week before I get a start on it. Wish me luck :)

I recently did mine and had great results.

Start from the helm working towards the out drive.

Cheers

Are you referring to removing it or putting the new one in? I had read something from a mechanic saying that putting the new one in can be easier going in through the drive towards the helm.

The hardest part seems to be getting to the cable ties in the run between the helm and sink area.

Installing the new cable I first tried to push from the drive toward the helm. I quickly abandon that plan and went the other way with far more success.

At the end of the day I am sure it can be done either way.
